A great debut album for a fantastic band

Finally re-released we are blessed to once again have the opportunity to relive a time a place in our lives that wasn't too long ago. The cd is nothing like the live shows. Picture the cd times 100. A great starting point to get yourself into something a little different then the typical run of the mill industrial/metal that seems to pollute the cd racks.. Listen to the samples. Figure out for yourself if it's right for you.

Looks to be the goth/metal band's first CD release.Probably considered by most fans to be(somewhat)better than 'Sin City'(see my review),as I believe this is the third Genitorture's work I've ever done a review of.Tunes here that sort of had me sit up and take some notice were "Reality Check",the slammin' "House Of Shame","River's Edge/Strip The Flesh" and maybe "Crack Track".I checked the liner notes here and it credits Hawkwind co-founder Nik Turner as this album's producer. How about that?

THIS IS THE ONLY GENITORTURERS CD I HAVE AND AM ACTUALLY SHOPPING FOR A NEW BECAUSE MY OTHER IS BASICALLY WORN OUT. I WANTED TO COMMENT ON THEIR LIVE SHOWS. I'VE SEEN THEM 3 TIMES AT A LOCAL DETROIT VENUE AND IT WAS INTERESTING TO SAY. NOT FOR THE SHY TYPE OR CHRISTIAN PERSON. IT WAS QUITE IMPRESSIVE THOUGH AND THEY EVEN INCLUDE THE AUDIENCE IN THEIR PERFORMANCE BY ACTUALLY LOCKING AN ACQUAINTANCE OF MINE IN A STEEL CAGE AND MAKING HIM CRAWL AROUND ON HIS HANDS AND KNEES AND SLAPPING HIS BACKSIDE WITH A BELT. LIKE I SAID...NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED BUT A TRUELY SUPERIOR SHOW. I WOULD SEE THEM AGAIN AND AGAIN IF THEY RETURNED TO DETROIT.

I have both Sin City and this album. I loved Sin City, so I bought this album.
It's a great heavy metal album, it's just not exactly very melodic in my mind. But, granted I get angry and I will listen to this CD, and it will make me feel better. I know all the lyrics, and I absolutely love this CD as well. But for repeat listenings? Being as ecelectic and ADHD as I am, I'll need something different. The songs aren't in themselves very unique from other stuff or themselves.

120 Days is a melting pot of metal & industrial. The riffs are heavy and driving, while the industrial overtones create a dark atmosphere. These guys really had something with this sound, I just wish they kept it up on the next album. They put on an incredible live show which was a feast for the ears and eyes.

I really do not see what people see in this. They are no different the the backstreet boys, and n'sync. You can find a son about love any day, any time. Trust me, this is nothing even remotely close to special, or original. This is just another band that got caught up in the trend of "boy bands" or whatever you guys call it. 98 degrees will just be forgotten like any other band that sold out.

I had listened to a couple of their albums prior to this one, and I remember, none of them were bad at all. Yes, they are "pop", but they aren't annoying, something that usually comes with being a pop star. I enjoyed listening to 98 Degree's album, "98 Degrees and Rising". They are just so cute! They have nice voices, and they sound really good together. The lyrics are nice, but nothing complex, which is understandable since they sing pop music, and that type of music typically caters to a teen audience. "Do You Wanna Dance", "Heat it Up" and "Fly With Me" are all faster tempo songs, and any of them have the potential to get a party started! I like the lyrics to "Heat it Up". "Baby, let me love you to the 98th degree..." They did a nice job of covering Michael Jackson's "She's Out of My Life". They used to instrumentation, they did it a capella. They included harmony and had a very listenable finished product.
These boys know how to croon as well. "Still", "Because of You" and oh my goodness, "(I Do) Cherish You" are all so sweet. "(I Do) Cherish You" is sensational. "Hardest Thng" is one of my favorite pop songs. It used to come on the radio all the time, so they forced it on the public.
I recommened this CD to r&b and pop fans. This album definitely contains some r&b elements, so I feel fans of both types of music would enjoy it. And ladies, these men are not at all har don the eyes. hehe

Ricky's best album is (arguably) still his 1999 (US) "Ricky Martin" with its hit "Livin La Vida Loca", but this one is still my favorite. Ricy's rich voice soars on tracks such as Te Extraño, Te Olvido, Te Amo and leaves us wanting more with every note. A fine actor as well as a singer, Ricky sang this song on "General Hospital" and had me gasping. Gloria Estefan helped bring Latino pop into the mainstream, but I believe that it's Ricky who will take it to its highest success. Highly recommend this album for any Latin music fan, Ricky Martin fan, or anyone who wants to listen to true romance. Also check out his 1991 "Ricky Martin" album

Her best album!
Rating (5)
Date: 2007-11-20
I "discovered" MCC less than a year ago when I bought a audio cassette (I don't own a cd player) from Goodwill for 1 dollar. It was "Party Doll" and I was pleasantly surprised to hear 10 songs among her best - Can't Take Love For Granted, Quittin' Time, Wherever You Are, Grow Old Along With Me, The Hard Way, Almost Home, He Thinks He'll Keep Her, Stones In The Road, 10,000 Miles, and This Shirt. I had seen her videos of Passionate Kisses and I Feel Lucky but I liked these other songs better! After enjoying these over and over, I realized I could get on Amazon.com and purchase earlier cassettes and maybe there would be songs that I liked as well, although the odds were very low since "Party Doll" was like a "greatest of" album. Well, I tried "Shooting Straight In The Dark", "State Of The Heart", and "Come On, Come On" and was very disappointed and put them on the lower shelf not be listened to except on a rare occasion. When I tried "A Place In The World", I gave the old "fist pump"! 8 of the songs are "very, very good" and the remainder are "very good" or "good." I like the songs about love gone bad, or unrequited love, instead of the "HEEE HAW!" type. Her voice and music are in full flower here and she wrote all the songs! What a talent! Her voice going two octaves lower seamlessly in the song "A Place In The World" is truly amazing! This is now my favorite album and will be played virtually every day.

The Whole Maybe Less Than The Sum of Its Parts
Rating (4)
Date: 2005-10-24

This album seems to have attracted some negative responses on Amazon feedback. One complains that it's not country, and that everything on it is awful. Mary Chapin Carpenter sits uncomfortably with the country tag but rightly or wrongly, Nashville made her what she is and some people like to pigeon-hole her for that. That is unfortunate, because those who really appreciate the music of Mary Chapin Carpenter recognise her first and foremost as an accomplished singer-songwriter. That may turn some people off. I believe that is their loss.
Having said that, I will admit to an initial disappointment with this album, my expectations were high following 1994's "Stones In The Road", which, incidentally, was the very first Mary Chapin album I heard that I had to wait, somewhat restlessly, for its release.
Over time, and it took probably a couple of years of sometimes passing interest, something finally gelled. I think the rather noisy intro to "Keeping The Faith" may have derailed me at first, and I wasn't that impressed with "Let Me Into Your Heart" from the time I heard it as the album's first single. I still think she's done better. In 1997, I was fortunate enough to see Mary Chapin in concert at Wolf Trap. The one song that I remember from that show was "Hero In Your Hometown",which is another one I hadn't particularly been impressed with up to that point. Was it because being at Wolf Trap, I felt like a hero in her hometown? Perhaps, but not really. As the song says, "everything looks so clear when you're looking back from such a distance/when the road not taken disappears into the path of least resistance." The idea that perceiving yourself as some kind of a hero works when you're young, but delivers a different view in hindsight. Insight. The songs that did grab my attention at first were "I Can See It Now" (I can see it now, the empty and the ache/that bitter little pill that I don't wanna take/instead I'd swallow all the pride I ever knew/to crawl back if you asked, all that I would do ..."), and "Naked To The Eye" ("which is worse is yet to come, your rebuff or my resign").
For reasons I find impossible to explain, some of the songs where I now consider Mary Chapin's artistry is to the fore, took a while to register. Particularly "Sudden Gift Of Fate" and "A Place In The World." They now ring in me as simple yet fundamental truths. In "Sudden Gift Of Fate" - "it's not if it comes down to your turn that someone, somewhere feels you've earned/you just learn to wait/for sudden gifts of fate." "A Place In The World" resonates with "takes some of us a little longer/a few false starts gonna make you stronger." And "since I've learned to walk, all I've done is run/ready on my mark, doesn't everyone need/a place in the world." Psychologists, amateur and otherwise, will likely have a field day on this review. Go for it. They will probably be able to explain the reason why I wasn't attracted to the album intitially and that I probably still don't realise.
I love the exuberance of "The Better To Dream Of You" ("like an old time tent revival I felt my heart come back alive/no preacher baby, no bible/just this love to testify" (somewhat ironic?) and the simple truth of "fool you once, you are forgiven, fool you twice you're just a fool". "I Want To Be Your Girlfriend" was once described in a review as "rock and roll silliness" but I beg to differ. It's another expression of youthful exuberance, and there's nothing silly about that.
Then there's "Ideas Are Like Stars" - "they fall from they sky, they run round your head/they litter your sleep as they beckon/they'd teach you to fly without wires or thread/they'd promise if only you'd let them". The only thing that sits a bit uncomfortably there for me is the word "litter" - I think there must be a better way of conveying the idea. Sorry Mary Chapin.
All in all, I think lyrically this may be one of Mary Chapin's strongest albums. She seems to possess a rare talent of comparing opposites to great effect. The one that sticks in my mind the most is from 1990's "Moon and St. Christopher" -"there's two lanes running down this road, whichever side you're on/accounts to where you want to go or what you're running from."
I Can See It Now. It's Naked To The Eye. Mary Chapin helps me to see my Place In The World. Not quite a Sudden Gift of Fate. But of course, it was never meant to be. At least, not until now. I once saw Mary Chapin described as a geographer of the heart. Traversing the terrain can be a painful but ultimately rewarding experience.
Oh my God. I think I've just realised what may have caused me to feel distant from the album at first. Mary Chapin, if you ever read this, it has nothing to do with you. It had everything to do with the time of its release and a confusing situation with someone. Which itself parallels something similar from the last month or so. The details, of course, I keep for myself. I may subtly reveal it in a song sometime.

Superb Beethoven Violin Concerto
Rating (5)
Date: 2010-03-06
I have always been an admirer of Heifetz. Superb technique, gorgeous sound. Despite the "cold" accusation, which I firmly believe had to do mostly with his unemotional platform behavior, many of his performances are heartfelt. That said, the Mendelssohn is about my least favorite Heifetz concerto recording. It is quite brisk, to say the least. And yeah, it sounds kind of cold to me. Sorry. It's the one and only Heifetz recording I feel that way about. The Mendelssohn is a beautiful, Romantic work and it works really well if the soloist gives it a bit of space here and there to sing, even in the finale. Heifetz's ultra quick finale is
a tour de force for sure, but there are other violinists I like better. Gil Shaham is great in this concerto.
The Beethoven is waaayyyy better. The 2nd and 3rd movements are wonderful. The second movement is really moving, with an almost magical beauty, and the finale moves happily along at a quick, appropriate pace. However, for all my admiration for the quality of the playing in the 1st movement, it seems a bit frenetic to me. Most other violinists (Perlman, Szeryng, Oistrakh, Francescatti, Kreisler, Krebbers, Repin, etc etc) take 23 to 26 minutes for the first movement. Jascha and Charles polish it off in 20'34" flat. My opinion is that the 1st movement would be for the ages had they slowed just a bit, to say 22'. As it is, it's still magnificent, but unnervingly quick in spots.
This latest incarnation of the recording is to die for. The sound is at once warm, full and brilliant. The first CD incarnation of these performances in the 80s was kind of awful, but this one holds up fine against any modern digital recording you can buy. Actually, it sounds better than some. The Mendelssohn is a bit dry, but the Beethoven has to my ears an ideal amount of reverberation to add glow to the sound. The 1st movement cadenza in Beethoven is thrilling to hear in SACD. The man's virtuosity was staggering.
Despite my reservations about Mendelssohn, 5 stars because of the Beethoven. The recording is worth the price for the slow movement of the Beethoven alone! Buy it.

Heifetz was perhaps the most polarizing artist of the last century. People either love him or hate him. His admirer's note his flawless technique and tonality. His detractor's say his performances sound cold. I happen to rate him (along with Milstein & Oistrakh) right at the top. If you have never heard Heifetz, this is a great place to start. If you are already a Heifetz fan, these recordings will not disappoint and the sound is also great.

To be able to hear the original performances just as they were recoded thirty to forty years ago is amazing. The DSD processing enables you to return to these important performances.
I am very impressed by the work Soundmirror is doing and I highly recommend these recordings to anyone interested in these early performances.

Heifetz handles both the Mendelssohn and Beethoven with his extraordinary skill and grace. He is by no means cold or mechanical on this recording-- instead, he is expressive though not sappy. The Beethoven is sheer perfection--it gives me chills up my spine whenever I hear it. I have heard many versions of this concerto, but the Heifetz and Munch version is the only one that sounds exactly right. The same goes with the Mendelssohn. Once you listen to this recording, you'll wonder how you were able to even tolerate other versions of these concertos.

If you already have the Tschaikowsky-Brahms Violin Concertos by Heifetz/Reiner, don't hesitate to buy this item also. Heifetz is again wonderful, always a little on the fast side.- In the Beethoven I prefer the Kreisler cadenza in the first movement, and no cadenza at all in the third. The Mendelssohn sounds even better than the Beethoven.- Munch/Boston are excellent partners, and the sound is great

New YA fantasy series
Rating (4)
Date: 2010-01-21
I struggled with this one. It's been translated from the original language, so maybe that had something to do with it. The overall idea of having to hunt things down is one that generally captures any reader's interest, but this one didn't seem so much intellectual as it did with the author just laying the pieces out there when the time came.
The pacing is okay and the characters are fairly well developed. The story starts off pretty good, then peters out toward the end, having to leave too many things undiscovered for the next three books in the series.

I received this book from the Amazon Vine program in order to review it. When I got it, I read the first page and thought it would be right up my daughters alley. I was unable to start it right away, so passed it on to her to read. The first few days she read it, she said it was good, but she didn't read it as often as she did other books and after a week, she said she didn't want to finish it. That happens rarely with her, so I knew the book could not have been that engrossing for her. The following are her words on the book.
(This is a review by a 14 year old). I started reading this book and I thought it was pretty good at first. It was fast paced, suspenseful and had good action. The 6 main characters were well formed and held my attention. But then as the story went on, it just dragged, and it wasn't interesting. There was too much dialogue and no action for me. It was too much talk about finding a Ring of Fire, instead of finding it. The kids seemed to do the same action over and over, sneak out of the hotel, do something, go back. Do the same thing the next time. I got over half way through the book, but the last time I put it down, I had no interest in picking it back up. Instead I started on the next book in my pile...Peter and The Shadow Thieves. That book I finished eagerly and went on to read the 3rd and 4th ones in the series. I wanted to like this book, but it just died on me. Sorry.

Every hundred years four children are selected to take on the task of....something. Even after finishing the book I'm not entirely sure what that task is fully. The four children, Elletra, Harvey, Mistral, and Sheng find themselves thrown together by the oddest of circumstances. It becomes obvious that these circumstances have been set up to place these four key players in the correct position to begin.
And so it does begin...in Rome. The descriptions of the city were quite nice and my version included a few pages of colored photos af some of the points of interest which was nice since I know not much about Rome.
The story itself revolves around the action the four children take once they meet and find themselves in posession of several strange articles. We follow their escapades as they try to solve the mystery of what these items mean and the power they must hold, for a killer has been set on their trail that will stop at nothing to have them. The children are likeable but there is very little depth or growth to them. Their journey is filled with accidental findings to help them continue when there were no apparent clues to help them.
The book ends with an obvious cliff hanger which I feel inclined to add to my TBR list if only to figure out what the task set for the children really is.

February 29th is an auspicious day for many calendars since it only occurs once every four years. The likelihood that four children all born on this day, not necessarily in the same year, would meet up in Rome at the same time is almost astronomical.
Yet that is exactly what happened to Elettra, Sheng, Harvey, and Mistral. Four kids from four different countries all end up in the same hotel together, the one that Elettra's family runs, on the eve of San Silvestro (New Year's Eve). When a freak blackout occurs, the kids venture out into the Roman night to investigate the extent of the blackout. While out and about they run into a man frightened for his life. He implores them to take his briefcase until he returns for it.
The kids do as they are aked, but discover the next morning that the man they met has been murdered. Now the race begins to uncover what the items in his briefcase mean and why he was murdered. Unfortunately for them, they are not the only ones investigating the briefcase. There is someone watching them & chasing them.
The first in a quartet series about the adventures of these four kids, The Ring of Fire is an excellent starting novel. While I feel that the characters are only semi-built, I also feel strongly that as the books progress the characters will grow in their dynamics. A realistic fiction with some history thrown in for educational purposes. Truly entertaining!

Both my ten year old son and I enjoyed this book. It was not a difficult book to read. The vocabulary was appropriate. The main characters were interesting young adults that had to solve a variety of problems during the course of the book. While this book was a fantasy type book, it did not have shades of Harry Potter that so many youth books seem to have now days. It was a book complete unto itself but it certainly left it open for more books to follow.

Needed the book and CD for a children's storytime at the library. CD was not included with the book. Never would have paid so much for the book if I knew the cd was not included.
