Let me just say that I'm not a hater of boy bands or pop music. I like pop actually and some boy bands' songs. I just happen to think that this particular band makes really boring music with no beat and no really special vocals. Nothing about this CD sets it apart accept for it's extreme blandness.

I really do not see what people see in this. They are no different the the backstreet boys, and n'sync. You can find a son about love any day, any time. Trust me, this is nothing even remotely close to special, or original. This is just another band that got caught up in the trend of "boy bands" or whatever you guys call it. 98 degrees will just be forgotten like any other band that sold out.

I had listened to a couple of their albums prior to this one, and I remember, none of them were bad at all. Yes, they are "pop", but they aren't annoying, something that usually comes with being a pop star. I enjoyed listening to 98 Degree's album, "98 Degrees and Rising". They are just so cute! They have nice voices, and they sound really good together. The lyrics are nice, but nothing complex, which is understandable since they sing pop music, and that type of music typically caters to a teen audience. "Do You Wanna Dance", "Heat it Up" and "Fly With Me" are all faster tempo songs, and any of them have the potential to get a party started! I like the lyrics to "Heat it Up". "Baby, let me love you to the 98th degree..." They did a nice job of covering Michael Jackson's "She's Out of My Life". They used to instrumentation, they did it a capella. They included harmony and had a very listenable finished product.
These boys know how to croon as well. "Still", "Because of You" and oh my goodness, "(I Do) Cherish You" are all so sweet. "(I Do) Cherish You" is sensational. "Hardest Thng" is one of my favorite pop songs. It used to come on the radio all the time, so they forced it on the public.
I recommened this CD to r&b and pop fans. This album definitely contains some r&b elements, so I feel fans of both types of music would enjoy it. And ladies, these men are not at all har don the eyes. hehe
Mikeisha's Top 5
1. (I Do) Cherish You
2. Hardest Thing
3. Heat it Up
4. Still

What a great CD! It's over 10 years old now, and it is still one of my favorite CDs of all time. "Between Now and Forever," "So Much for Pretending," it's hard not to love this CD. Bryan White's second (and really, his last) major release, this is probably the strongest album in his catalog (though some of the new stuff--non-label--is amazing). Worth every penny and the shipping!

I found the book OK up until about 1/2 way through. Then it just bogged down and I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Perhaps it's because I'm not the target age range. I found myself comparing the plot points of this book to so many other, better books I've read over the years that I couldn't just enjoy this book for its own sake.

Unlike Curse of the Spider King, my 9 y.o. never could get into this novel. He reads like crazy, and just finished Watership Downs, so it wasn't his problem, it was the book. He said he found it hard to get into, and a bit boring. I recommend the Curse of the Spider King series instead.

"Awesome" in the words of my 12-year old daughter.
As I do with juvenile books from the Vine program I hand them off to my two voracious readers...my 12 year old daughter and 11 year old son. After all, they're the target audience...what good would a review by an adult be when trying to decide on a book for a teen or pre-teen? (Ok, there is content and suitability but for these books I'm not concerned there will be inappropriate things in it) That would be like giving my wife (who does not like to cook) kitchen products to review.
The "kids save the day" theme was popular when I was a kid (anyone remember The Three Detectives series - The Mystery of the Stuttering Parrot (The Three Investigators No. 2)) and it's still just as popular today. "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" and the Harry Potter series are popular with my kids, and my son is on his second reading of Ender's Game (Ender, Book 1). This book is right up their alley.
They both really liked the book. I'm sure it's not great literature but they don't complain about the writing. They found the story to be very enganging and both liked the twists at the end. They gave the book 5 stars and recommend it to their friends (my daughter has seen it in the library at her school). And as further proof they really liked the book...they're both looking forward to the next book in the series, Century #2: Star of Stone.

Century Book One: The Ring of Fire
Rating (3)
Date: 2010-04-27
This is a fun beginning to the Century series quartet. I believe there are only four intended books but there are plans to license additional products related to the series(board game, etc. maybe?) One thing to note up front- the author is Italian and as such, the text is translated. I felt the translation could have been better as there were some idiosyncrasies to the text.
Four children have been brought together by circumstances in Rome. The ensuing adventure will take the four on a quest through the richly portrayed city where they will be tested and begin to uncover the unique gifts they possess. There are so many reviews posted, I won't write yet another summary.
Bottom line is that this book was somewhat entertaining for me, an adult. I read it aloud to my 10-year-old daughter and she enjoyed it though it took us a bit to build momentum. It was not as enjoyable to read as, say, the Harry Potter books but then, that's some stiff competition. The good news was that the book did get better in the second half.
Others have noted that this book brought to mind The DaVinci Code, only for kids. Yes, I can see where that is accurate as the characters go on a dramatic mission, hunting down clues while the reader tries to catch on to what the next twist will be. What this made me think of, imho, were the Trixie Belden books I used to read as a kid. They were similar to Nancy Drew- basically a bunch of kids running around trying to solve a mystery. Similarly, this story doesn't take genius to follow the bread crumbs.
I really appreciated the fact that the book is entirely unoffensive- no bad language, positive message, no sex- just a group of special kids trying to do the right thing. It definitely recalls the wholesomeness of those Nancy Drew/Hardy Boy/Trixie Belden type mysteries.
The writing is awkward- I'm not a fan of the present tense- and I am not totally sure if some of the stylistic elements are artifacts of it having been translated or just that the author was trying to 'dumb it down' for juvenile readers.
A good read for the kids. I wouldn't warn anyone away from it, but it's not going to make my list of recommended reads or must-haves-- there is just so much out there that is better than this. Final impression- eh, it was okay.

It takes a Quartet to control the Ring of Fire...

Elettra is the daughter of a hotel owner in Rome, and she has always done her part to help with anything the hotel needs. When there is a mix-up with reservations, she offers to allow three children from different cities of the world to spend their time in her bedroom with her. Their first night, they discover that not only do they now share a bedroom as their sleeping quarters, but the same birth date, February 29th, Leap Day. It is a coincidence that shouldn't be looked over, and is the start of a fantastic adventure for these children.
Harvey is from New York, and he is probably the most logical of the children. He's not the type to rush head first into a situation without thinking it over first, and to him, a coincidence is just that. He has always been a quiet child, but an adventure in the city of Rome may be just what he needs to wake him up.
Mistral is from Paris, and she is an only child, living with her mother. She's artistic and doesn't leave home without her sketch pad. She is elegant, quiet, and never gets into any trouble. She thinks that there may be something behind the coincidental birthday issue among her and her new found friends, and she's all for an adventure, even if it does sound scary.
Sheng is from the city of Shanghai, and he is by far the goofiest of the four children. He is loud, and outspoken at times. The prospect of an adventure only makes him more excited, but he also brings comedy to this novel. I found myself looking forward to moments with Sheng, as he always seemed to make the best of things throughout their adventure.
When reading this book, I had only really one complaint, and that was the point of view in which it was written. I felt like it needed to be written in more of a first person view, rather than the third-person aspect that it was. I would have enjoyed this story more if I were able to read it from the point-of-view of the children. I think it would have given the book more feeling, especially during the times where they were faced with decisions that would induce great emotion.
I also have to admit that for a child, this book may seem a little scary at times, especially when the man that forces the briefcase on them is murdered. I was a little shocked at the method of killing that the murderer used, as well as some of his other actions. Personally my sister would be able to handle this, as she is mature for her age at 10, but I've noticed that some children aren't as lucky.
I'm more than willing to continue reading this story, and look forward to reading the second installment, Star of Stone, where their adventure will continue in the streets of New York. It's scheduled to be released on September 28, 2010, according to Amazon.

Dear God, i can't stop listening to john coltrane albums! i've been on a two week bender now. lost my job. my car was repossessed. yesterday the old lady took off, saying, "you care about that old saxophone player more than you care about me!" and, Lord help me, she was right. "don't let the door hit you in that nasty behind of yours, on the way out," was all that i shouted back, as i cranked up the stereo even louder. the album playing was another of his classic Impulse releases, "dear old stockholm," from sessions made in 1963 and 1965. what a great album, man. the title track, which is first up, had me laughing and dancing, then comes the beautiful "after the rain," and i'm like crying my butt off. but "one down, one up," brings me right back up. all that emotional coltrane energy pouring into my soul, like a drug, baby. i am soooo addicted, it's not funny. "after the crescent" is more fire-music, more of trane's soul served up hot and fresh. and then the last track "Dear Lord," has me weeping like a little child again. such a gorgeous ballad. each note as pretty as a woman's behind. man, i need help! i love this music, but i have to pay the bills, have to do something else besides listening to trane all day and all night. still, with that said, hear i sit, listening to "Like Sonny," and all that i can really think about is what coltrane masterpiece am i going to listen to next?

What is it about John Coltrane that sparks such heated arguments one way or the other? I don't know that there's an answer to that, even in light of the simple fact of Jazz being such a complex form of music, and the accountability of personal likes and dislikes when deciding what is palatable. Or maybe it's just that Trane brings out the music critic in everyone, for better or for worse. I can't account for everyone's tastes, I myself like to some degree 95% of Coltrane's immense catalog, (or at least what I've heard!) but "Dear Old Stockholm" is accessible a work as you're gonna get from the master. Minus Elvin Jones on drums (Roy Haynes replaces) the classic crew is present (Tyner and Garrison) and as usual other worldly. 5 no nonsense tracks make up this offering, and it's clearly all killer, no filler. Trane novices may recognize the sweet "After The Rain" and one of my favorite JC tracks, ever, "Dear Lord" from the "Gentle Side Of John Coltrane" release, a greatest hits collection. It's always good to get those original albums though, and "Stockholm" is one of my favorites and a JC Impulse release. Besides the ballads, the bop is evident on the blazing and timeless "One Down, One Up" as Roy drives the quartet as ably as Elvin, no easy task. A well rounded addition to any level of jazz enthusiast's collection, "Dear Old Stockholm" is a perfect slice of the Coltrane pie.

DEAR OLD STOCKHOLM: pushing forward!

i know that i am a bit liberal with my stars when it comes to reviewing Coltrane discs, but it's tough to hold back when dealing with this monumental and underheard masterpiece. Dear Old Stockholm has been in almost constant play since i purchased it about one year ago.
when it comes down to deciding which Coltrane cd's to purchase, the proposition can be a bit overwhelming (well....not as overwhelming as say, Miles Davis). there are a range of styles and quite a few different shades of Coltrane's music to be found across his short, but prolific musical career. some may be put off by the sheer power and force of his work towards the end of his days; such albums like Meditations (another five star affair - in my opinion); and the respectable effort of Ascension may be a bit too much for the average jazz fan. but the music on Dear Old Stockholm somehow stradles that line of song/sound and showcases unfathomable depths of beauty, melody, precision, power, passion, and grace. each piece seems to build and swell in that big deep Coltrane sound...his solos stretching out and painting wild and vivid colours on the audio canvas; the bass climing high and then swooping low in a loose, yet grounded fashion, piano notes swinging around and violently crashing with cymbals and snares. the whole band getting scooped up and driven into this sonic vortex of their own creation! yes, it's all that dramatic! but the band never falls into "free" territory where it's just blowing hard for ther sake of blowing hard...every player pushes the limits of the song's melody at times, but it never strays so far that it misses the point. and to me, that's one of the greatest points of Dear Old Stockholm. the fact that the passion and the discipline are shown in evidence as going hand in hand.
those of you who want to find the right balance between Coltrane's early style of melody and fast harmonics and his emotional passion and strength of his later years, should wait to longer and get this superb album. it will be one purchase that you will never regret.

"One Down, One Up" is an absolutely shattering performance. Coltrane and Co. are dancing brilliantly between form and chaos. Some of Coltrane's later "transcendent" music sounds to my ears a bit squawky and abrasive, but this relies more on vamps, with all of the defiant anti-authoritarianism of free jazz -- think of it as a cross between "My Favorite Things" and "Om." Having not yet been born in the 60s, I use the passion, fury, and exuberance of this recording to channel backward to a frightening but more hopeful time. Every time I listen to this record I come away thrilled yet haunted. Thank you, John Coltrane!

This is a wonderful example of what I call the "summer adventure" novel. One where kids find their summer interrupted by an exciting adventure. In this case, it's a coastal community that finds an 18th century ghost ship stranded in their bay. It nicely ties together several elements into an entertaining story. A fun mystery, ghostly encounters, piracy, all add up to a rewarding adventure for kids or even adults that still enjoy these kind of stories they grew up on.

A blend of mystery, ghost story and pirate tale, Dietlof Reiche's Ghost Ship is a brilliant novel that will keep readers intrigued until the end. Set in a small New England community in present day, Reiche supplements his story with flashbacks to the 18th century that add to the ghostliness of the tale.
Vicki is a twelve year old girl who works as a waitress in her dad's restaurant, Ye Olde Seashell Room. A community that thrives with tourism, their spectacular bay is the main reason people go there to escape. Except one day, the bay disappears. Nothing is left except a muddy area where the bay used to be, until the Storm Goddess shows up. A two hundred and thirty year old sailing vessel, the Storm Goddess appears in the middle of the empty bay looking brand new. Vicki and her new friend Peter appear to be the only one troubled by the bay's disappearance and the ship's reappearance. Could this have anything to do with Vicki's ancestor's journal? He was a quartermaster on the ship and Vicki's reading of the journal coincided with the bay's disappearance. Suddenly Vicki is being haunted by ghosts and she knows the only way to return everything to normal is to get aboard the ghost ship and unlock an ancient curse. All that stands in her way is a greedy mayor, a story hungry reporter, a security detail and her curfew.
Reiche story unfolds in such a way that a reader is never bored, yet kept in suspense until the end of the tale. His characters are fun and adventurous, everyday people who find themselves thrown into a mystery. The book, though it could be classified as horror, is perfect for ages 7-12 because of its lack of gory details and Reiche's masterful story telling skills.
