Light, clean entertaining story with limited depth

This book is a quick read. It has solid ideas and is an entertaining--but not memorable--book for its target audience. The main character is generally likeable and the Grey Griffins are loyal and determined. It is definitely more toward kids and preteens instead of teenagers and adults. Conflicts are not complex--good versus evil--with no twisted motives or characters who stray from their basic personality style.
I like to pre-screen books for my kids. For Grey Griffens #1, I would have liked more "meat", both for the protagonists and for the storyline. There are no extra scenes, nothing that makes you feel like there is an entire world for immersion. It felt more like stage sets placed there for a scene then disassembled. There were no surprises. The writing style was straightforward and tells the reader what to think, rather than allowing readers to infer or imagine what someone looks like or the motive for their actions.
It's not a bad book. I just wanted more. And the part that really bothered me (SPOILER ALERT, don't read on if you want to stay out of it) is when Max was being chased through his grandmother's home by a monster. He hides up in the attic to get away, leaving the monster trapped below with his grandmother! What type of hero example is that?
Someday I might read more of the series, but currently, I'll devote my reading time toward other books.

This book had every thing I wanted in a book, adventure,mystery that is understand later on, and last and importantly one special kid that can do something special.I won't tell you the book like most reviewers do but I will say that this book takes you in to a world of fantastic creatures and fairy tales. The revenge of the shadow king is not scary as the cover is(that's what I thought at first) but how should I say this... cool. In my opinion I loved this book and can't wait to read more. !!!!!!!!GREY GRIFFINS RULE!!!!!!!!
