A Good Manga Turned into Garbage

When I read the manga, before I got the anime, I thought "hmm...corporate but pretty, maybe they are preparing for a killer anime". Unfortunately not. The art in the anime is still very nice, but the plot and character development, which was very promising in the manga, seems to have been dropped on the cutting room floor.

Watch this in Japanese, without subtitles. You'll be better for it. Unless you understand spoken Japanese. Then there's always the mute button.

Better yet, buy the manga. It is very pretty.

Does not live up to the genre

I'm not sure how it became stylish to make fun on giant robots in anime but it has. I'm not sure how `Gun Parade March' rose to be considered above this genre but it did.

The giant robot genre is still one of interest, because like WWII movies there are always new versions of an old story. Here our giant robot hero pilots are Japanese teenagers conscripted to defend the earth from giant robot invaders. `Gun Parade March' equips itself with all the right tools, giant robots, alien invaders, teenagers, a boarding school. Like other hit anime of the genre like `Full Metal Panic' and `Gundam Wing' this formula should have worked. But it doesn't.

Unfortunately, `Gun Parade March' does not offer us a single interesting character, compelling situations or exciting battles. It is devoid of the most basic elements which make a story interesting. We don't care about the characters, so we cannot care about their battles. Even the fight scenes are boring.

With all the other great anime coming out right now in the giant robot genre and others, give `Gun Parade March' a pass.

This one proves that Japan loves classic American SF

Without giving much away, imagine the American film Starship Troopers, but this time with younger (16) soldiers. Then set it in Japan, adding in a previous alien invasion/war in 1945. Add mechs. Stir well. There you have it.

Very well executed, if you forgive the borrowing from Heinlein, as I do. The only thing that suffers is the fact that this is "just" an intro/setup for the whole story.

The best part is characterization. These young soldiers act realistically and don't come off as either stereotypical whiny teens or hard-boiled, emotionless vets.

If you want to see a really good translation of mediocre American film based on classic SF, this is the one to get.

Now, if there was a way to do Stranger in a Strange Land...

After hearing this was simuliar to Full Metal Panic!, I decided to check it out. I was expecting the usually plot.. Teenage kid who is afraid of the enemy learns that he or she has special abilities to save the world.. However, this is not the case. Sure there is a ton of simularities to this and FMP.. but this anime has enough differences to stick out. Instead of just one main character there seems to be several pilots it centers around. I'm looking forward to volume 2.

A great series - please support it!

"Gunparade March", if you do some research on the title, was based on a Playstation game by SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc.) that came out in 2000. If you dig a bit further, you should find the series's review and how, because of the attrition from fighting the "Genjuu" beasts, teenaged students are now being called up to fight in HWTs (just think of these as the generic mobile suits in the Gundam universes) with Atsushi Hayami supposed to be a trump card in the war.

When I first read that review of the series, the first thing that came to mind was "Not another giant robot series with the main character, a teenager, discovering that he has some mysterious power or ability that lets him defeat his enemies!"

Very happily, "Gunparade March" failed to live up to that expectation.

Don't get me wrong, though; there is combat in the series - and they are done well - but those scenes are not in every episode. The series is more about people living their lives as best they could when monsters can appear out of nowhere and attack them as well as the high school students who, when the raid siren goes off, have to jump into their HWTs, go into combat, and oftentimes, die in the process. In other words, it's a series that has a great deal of interpersonal relationships involved.

A minor spoiler; a favorite and very sad scene of mine has a TV news anchor read the names and ages of those young kids who died in the day's fighting, and people passing along simply walk along as if they didn't even hear. Great emotional impact, I thought, with dusk and the rain falling, and the voice reading what seemed to be a never-ending list of names.

All in all, this is a great series that I highly recommend. I'm only giving four (actually 4 1/2 :-) stars to this disc as it, according to Media Blasters's website, carries the first four episodes, which provides the introduction to the storyline and characters. You don't really see why someone like Shibamura Mai (one of the main characters) would volunteer to join the armed forces as a pilot - at least, not yet.

Thieves steal $2 million of marked money and become involved with crooked FBI agent Val Kilmer. Cristian Slater plays chief thief who must foil Kilmer's plans and save his daughter.
HARD CASH is pretty dreadful. How dreadful? It was originally released as RUN FOR THE MONEY. Films don't change their titles for nothing.
The acting is okay, but there are a half-dozen or so too many why-are-we-doing-this scenes. The usually reliable Val Kilmer walks through the movie with a dazed and confused expression on his face. Slater is a little bit more on top of things, but he's saddled with a wise beyond her years daughter who doubles as a card sharp and is forced to read lines like "I just can't live like this anymore." Not your typical eight-year-old declaration.
Granted, not many movies have dart gun toting midgets crawling out of toilets, but that happens before the opening credits are run. After that it's all downhill. Pass this one by.

starts off good with Slater, Troyer, and two others including his girlfriend try to rob William Forsythes place but it ends up with Slater going into the slammer but then he comes back some months or years later and pulls off a heist that involves Bookem Woodbine, Balthazat Getty, Matthew Schulze and Daryl Hannah, but the problem is that Val Kilmer, a corrupt cop was going to do the heist. all im saying is that Slater and Kilmer do a great cat and mouse game but they should'nt of been in this mess. with wooden characters, but sometimes good action, specifically when the team turns on one another and kills each other over the money. could've been better with different leads

Christian Slater reunited with Val Kilmer reminds us of the high tension action flick "True Romance." But no more is seen the burning power generated by the Tarantino-scripted film; instead, in "Hard Cash" you only see a banal B-action flick with wasted opportunities for any of those involved.

The story is rather simple: master thief Slater and his cohorts attempt to do their final job as Kubrick's "The Killing," but realize that the money they get are all marked by FBI. They have to wait another day for money laundering, but while waiting, crooked agent Val Kilmer steps in, to extort money from them.

As the mildly interesting opening of the film shows, "Hard Cash" has slightly comical flavor, not taking itself so seriously. OK, but with what little humor in there soon gone away, the film goes on and on without much to boast of. Though the heist scenes are shot competently, the suspense comes very few between the acts, so even its 90 minutes running time looks very tedious. And obligatory explosions and car chase are, to be honest, very cheap.

The leading players, including Slater, Kilmer, and Daryl Hannah might not impress you, but the supporting cast are interesting -- see, for example, Balthazar Getty ("Lost Highway"), Bokeem Woodbine ("3000 Miles to Graceland"), Sara Downing (TV's "Roswell"), William Forsythe ("The Rock"), and Verne Troyer (Mini-Me of "Austin Powers" sequels). But they have no moment to really show something they can, possibly except for Troyer's "contigency plan" and even he, or always reliable Getty or Forsythe cannot save the show. So, what can you expect from the leads, who plays the characters we don't care much?

Even Kilmer's and Slater's fans would be dismayed with their "acting," because they don't show any. Those who like them should wait for a Lenny Harlin film "Mindhunters" where they are sure to live up with our expectations.

This so-so DTV flick starring surprisingly big names like Christian Slater, Val Kilmer, Verne Troyer, and Daryl Hannah somehow manages to deliver very little out of its premise and makes little use of its capable cast. The plot skips from one heist failure to another, but delivers little in the way of action or witty dialogue. Val Kilmer is given little to do as our bad guy and Christian Slater isn't cool enough as the good guy. The film suffers from a poor script and horrendously uninspired directing. Watching it is kind of like watching someone go through their morning routine. It does all it needs to do, but doesn't add anything interesting. What this movie needs is a better script and cooler music. The movie, however, isn't bad enough to get the dreaded one star rating.

This is a good film for the first couple of times but then seems a bit boring but I just watch it for the fight scenes. This story is about British Royal Marine Eric 'Hawk' Kelly (Gary Daniels) who is out to get answers and draw blood when he arrives in New York to investigate his step brothers brutal murder. With the help of streetwise detective Lizzie Hampton, Hawk uncovers the most lucrative of black market plots - the theft and sale of human organs! Hawk meets exotic blade and stickfighting artist Garr (Cass Magda) who is the one responsible for his brother's death.

Good if you like Gary
Rating (4)
Date: 2003-05-13

This is clearly not a high budget movie, but I nonetheless liked it and feel that it is worth seeing.

If you've read my other reviews of Gary Daniels' movies, you'll know that I watch because of him in particular. He's an amazingly good-looking and appealing guy. In this movie, he's a work of art -- flawlessly perfect from head to toe. He gets to show off his impressive physique in several scenes, displaying outstanding shape, proportion, and definition. And there is a love interest explored. Indeed, there is even a sex scene, albeit it far too brief and chaste for a guy who has this amount of sex appeal. (How can directors put a man this beautiful into a movie and not capitalize upon his sex appeal? It just doesn't make any sense). If you enjoy looking at Gary, then you must get this DVD, moreso than perhaps any other.

Yes, the plot is your typical martial arts story line of "You're a bad guy who killed my relative, so I'm coming after you out of revenge, and will kill you with my fists and feet and impressive martial arts skills". But the movie does have more humor to it than most of Gary's movies (some of it a bit gruesome though). So if you're into the Jackie Chan type of martial arts movie where there's something "whimsical" thrown in every now and then, you may appreciate that aspect. I'm not into martials arts per se, and except for the final fight scene which drags on far too long for my tastes, this movie had enough plot and character development inbetween fight scenes to keep my interest going whereas most martial arts movies can be a snoozefest for me. I really liked watching Gary here because he does more acting than in some other movies, and his character gets to explore his personal/social side.

The DVD quality is not the greatest, but it's hard to quibble about what you're looking at when it's Gary's pretty face onscreen. The DVD has a choice of english or french language track. No closed captioning. It has scene selections. The special features aren't special, and consist of 2 biographies of people who apparently are part of the company that produced this DVD, and a mini-documentary in french about what appears to be the same company.

If I could see Gary Daniels kick butt for two hours strait I would have that tape playing in my house 24\7. Unfortunately some of his movies have been cursed not only with a plot, but with a really bad one. The acting is fine but when a nine-year-old writes a script there is only so much good acting can do. The fights are great. If this movie had a better editor or a director who knew the advantages of changing angles or say a writer who graduated high school this could be a 5 star movie easily. Daniels is the best!

Great film on a topic not explored enough....porn addiciton. Now it's not a heavy subject but gives you just enough. It's film about a young woman (the lovely Marlyne Afflack) who meets a man and learns that he has an issue. It depict's scenes where Harpers character cannot perform for a real woman but can get it up for his films. You really get to see how much his life is affected by it when he sees an attractive woman pass by and automatically goes to 'rewind' her passing by again. The beginning is somewhat immature but it gets better as the film progresses. Good laughs and some good diaglogue into how the 2 main characters deal with eachother. The supporting characters also do a great job as well as the subject matter outside of the 2 main characters. You also get to witness some Jamaican culture as seen with some characters and the dancehall club scene.

Otogi Zoshi is less one 26 episode series and more two 13 episode series. The first half takes place during Heian-era Japan and draws heavily from Japanese fairy tales. The second half transports the characters we have come to know and love into the modern era, but manages to utterly fail at retaining the charm of the first half of the series. Seriously, just buy the first half and pretend a second half was never made.

Another Production IG Masterpiece
Rating (5)
Date: 2005-12-16

Production IG, the company behind Blood: The Last Vampire and Ghost in the Shell has done it again. Those already familiar with the studio have come to expect a great deal from them, although they do slip up on occasion. (Kai Doh Maru...though I suspect that was really a simple experimentation on the part of the animation staff) But it would appear that their techniques were honed to perfection just in time for Otogi Zoshi.

Like all their productions, Otogi Zoshi has a very strong soundtrack, and their familiar 'RL' (Real Life) style of art manages to be luminous and jewel-toned even with a muted palette. Yet where Kai Doh Maru failed - lack of story and dialogue in spite of compelling subject material (The legend of the Kimiko) - Otogi Zoshi succeeds on every level. There's a little something for every kind of audience in this series: adventure, mystery, magic, action, romance...it's all present. The characters are extremely likeable and sympathetic: you can't help but NOT like them and empathise with their struggles. I am especially impressed by the strong and indomitable young heroine of the series, Lady Minamoto no Hikaru.

Finally, for the geeks and lovers of Japanese history and culture, there's a second disk that includes lectures on Japan's Heian period. (This switches to lectures on things such as architecture in the Tokyo arc of the series) I watched every single one of these extras - they go a long way to enriching the individual episodes. It is subtle touches like these that make Otogi Zoshi a series well worth owning. (In fact, get your hands on the soundtrack, too!)

I first saw the box for Otogi Zoshi a while ago and thinking that it would just be an anime based on the popular Xbox game I kept blowing it off. When I finally decided to actually read what it was about I became intrigued and now I am borderline obsessed. It has action which I will equate to that of Samurai Champloo (one of my favorites) and they have done their research as it shows quite beautifully. Note: Otogi Zoshi are short prose fiction. The characters are so vivid and have such captivating personalities. I have to also say that this is the best depiction of Abe no Seimei that I have seen in anime. To top it off they include lectures from Tokyo U to explain it all. If you love Japan, its history, or just think you do, buy it. If you love beautiful artwork, buy it. And if you love a good story that doesn't always have a happy ending, buy it!

Otogi Zoshi - Excellent historical anime!

Otogi Zoshi is set during Japan's Heian Era (794-1185) and is equal parts action, drama, and intrigue. Kyoto, the capital of ancient Japan has become a corrupt and run-down city, filled with self serving nobles, and onmyoji who only care about gaining political power. In the meantime, the city is suffering from famine and widespread disease.

Minamoto no Raiko, a reknowned archer and samurai is sent to recover a legendary gem called the magatama said to hold the power to restore the capital. But Raiko has fallen ill so his younger sister, Hikaru secretly assumes his identity and goes in his place. She and her loyal bodyguard Tsuna later meet new companions and have many exciting and dangerous adventures on the quest for the legendary magatama.

The animation is gorgeous to look at and the storytelling is superlative filled with lots of complex and memorable characters. The producers made special attention to historical details as you can see in the extra features section.

If you are looking for a change of pace from standard anime fare, this is definitely the series to watch. The main character is similar to "Kai Doh Maru" which I also have, but definitely this story is WAY superior of the two.

I highly recommend Otogi Zoshi to all anime fans, it is one of the BEST anime series out there!

IT'S QUICKSAND!!!!!!!
Rating (5)

Sid recently went against his better judgement and decided it would be ok for Santa to join Sunday golf. Yeah, not really. On the way to the first tee the first C was pretty much yelled about one of the players. Fantastic you know it's gonna be a great day. Shockingly, the first 5 holes went without incident. Then we came to the sixth hole.

After being explicitly told to fight his true nature to maintain a 4:1 ratio of shots hit to shots counted and just hit one shot and move on, Santa shanked a 5 iron into the sand. Sid was on the other side of the fairway and did not see Santa drop another ball and hit a shot into a mud pit hazzard. Upon pulling the cart to where Santa stood, we saw a yellow rope. Lost on Santa, this means DO NOT FREAKING GO HERE. Then we saw this buffoon walking in the mud with what looked like mud covered shoes. Sid said "what are you doing?" "My shoes!" Santa said, pointing to two gashes in the mud. Then the realization came that this mess of a human stepped in the mud, stepped out and his shoes stayed behind. Looking on in amazement, Santa was seen digging with his hands through hot wet smelly mud to retrieve sweet nike golf shoes. However, while digging, Santa started sinking through mud that had been cultivated from heavy rain recently and 2 weeks of 90+ degree weather. As he sank in to almost his knee Santa screamed out "ITS'S QUICKSAND!" Sid replied "They're just f**king shoes get out of there!" But no, Santa finally got out and got the shoes. He then put them back on, went to the sand trap and hit the shot he should of in the first place. And with muddy shoes, socks, and legs, Santa played at his jolly worst for the final 12 holes.

I guess you could look at this story 2 ways. Was it an abosolutely stupid thing to do? Yes yes. But, if he has nothing else, Santa has resolve. Who else would have played 12 more holes of golf after an incident like that? The oaf deserves credit for unflinching determination to keep going on no matter how many times he trips himself up. You wouldn't be the same without your clumsiness in every aspect of being, Zap Rogdower, and Sid applaudes your ability to keep us laughing, surprised, and constantly amazed after all these years.

The movie itself? Not so good. Its a pretty predictable thriller that tends to drag itself on an on. While I will admit there are some interesting scenes, the movie really doesn't pick up until the very end when the music kicks in for the credits. Its just so haunting. Unfortunatly, I cannot say the same for the rest of the movie. To make a long story short, my opinion is if you do happen to decide to pick this movie up, don't expect greatness. Although Michael Keaton and Cane aren't bad in and of themselves, the rest of the movie is pure...well I leave the rest of the sentance up to you to decide.

This was a sleeper, but I went on to discover that this was an excellent movie. Although Michael Keaton has perfoprmed better in other roles, this was a good reversal of a drama role from his standard comedy. Don't take that wrong, he is a great actor, something that these other so called actors could strive for in their performances.

This low budget drama/thriller was very average even though it has both Michael Kane and Michael Keaton it was still slightly dull and tedious. There were a few interesting parts that I thought were hilarious especially with Kane and the extremely bad acting from the rest of the cast so I guess it wasn't all that bad. The story was about Keaton's character who plays a bank employee who goes to France in order to investigate a bad transaction or transfer of money that appeared on his computer, he soon becomes a fall guy for the Russian mafia and some drug ring so he needs to prevent the bad guys from killing him as well as clearing his name from a murder he did not commit. If you like both these actors then you might be interested in this film but don't expect a high caliber thriller or something like that.

I greatly recommend this anime title for all enjoy watching anime. If you ask, "What is anime?" Look it up at www.askjeeves.com www.yahoo.com there are plenty of sites dedicated to anime and who will explain. Look those up then decide if you want to by this anime.

Really cute and colorfull and pretty funny. Starts out a bit slow but it does pick up. All the characters are (and Nanas) pretty loveable. My favorite is the violet Nanapon (i think that's what she's called) if you watch this you'll see why. The animation for this show is very lovely. And the songs are pretty cute.
