Eye Candy
Rating (3)
Date: 2008-06-18

History buffs may burst a blood vessel at my 3 stars; and truly I'd like to split it right down the middle at 2 1/2 stars. Amazons and Gladiators is eye candy, nothing more. The feminist message of the words is belied by the costuming and every visual detail of the film, and historically it's a total mess--it takes place in 60 A.D., and at the end the voice over says something like "and the Empire would soon fall." Yeah, soon, where soon means some 400 years later; don't hold your breath. (Another reviewer called out "Caesar's" existence in 60 AD--but Caesar was a title and so there certainly would be A Caesar, although not Julius Caesar.) But as another reviewer has pointed out, you don't see a movie called Amazons and Gladiators and expect historical accuracy! Apparently what you DO see it for is soft core porn, at least in spots. Others have called the sex scenes gratuitous...I think they've got it backwards--the plot is gratuitous and the whole point of this is to watch attractive women romp, so to speak. And the gladiatorial battles? Cat fight! Really, nothing more need be said, except that the lead is a lovely woman who isn't a half bad actress. It might be nice to see her in an actual movie.

The Little Movie That Could
Rating (5)
Date: 2006-12-21
I found Amazons and Gladiators a very pleasant surprise. From its packaging I expected a sexploitation flick, in the manner of "women in prison" films but with swords and Romans instead of inmates and wardens. Understand, by the way, I'm not putting down WIP movies, there's a place for such guilty pleasures. But in Amazons and Gladiators, what I got was ever so much more.
Okay, this is obviously a low-budget film. Much of it takes place in the forest simply because, I'm sure, it cost no money to build the "set". None of the actors in A&G is ever going to win an Academy Award. Having said all that, however, Amazons and Gladiators is also obviously the product of talented, skilled people who've taken what they had to work with and crafted a pretty darn good little movie. The writing, direction, camera work, even the acting in this film are all surprisingly good.
The main character is Serena, who as a child has her mother murdered by the brutal Roman governor Marcus Crassius. Kidnapped into slavery as a dancer, ten years pass, her virginity is sold to a Roman Senator. Serena fights back against her rape, killing the Senator, then escapes along with devoted friend-since-childhood and fellow slave Briana and the captured Amazon leader Ione. Taken into the Amazons, trained as a warrior, in time Serena returns to kill Crassius. Captured again, she winds up a gladiator, fighting for the amusement of the people and the governor before finally getting her chance to face Crassius himself.
Not a blindingly original plot, but anything can be done well or poorly. This story stands or falls on our caring for the characters on-screen. Those characters may be a bit stock - the warrior traumatized as a child returning to wreak vengeance on her tormentor, the stern but loving teacher, the steadfast best friend, the evil and sexually degenerate bad guy/governor - but the characters themselves are so well-drawn, so believable, they rise above the stereotypes. We can, especially, become emotionally invested in Serena and her fate, root for her success, because she comes across as an admirable, decent, real person.
The cinematography in Amazons and Gladiators is quite nice. What sets exist might be a bit bare bones, but they're well-designed, well put-together, and get the job done. If the arena fight scenes don't exhibit Russell Crowe Gladiator level choreography, still they also get the job done. Yes, there's a certain amount of female nudity that is in some cases gratuitous. But hey, I **like** female nudity.
This is one of those films that proves "low-budget" doesn't have to mean "bad". Sometimes the lack of a serious budget forces moviemakers to be really inventive in compensation. Depending on the talent, skill level and commitment of the creators involved, you either rise to such a challenge or fall. Everyone involved with making Amazons and Gladiators rose.
It's hard not to like a movie that does so much with so little.

I liked it.. it was a 'turn of your brain and enjoy' kinda movie. It wasn't totally gratutious and save for the guy she ended up with.. it was quite cool.
But just for the record... bathing was extensive in the 'Roman Empire' It was only after Rome fell that bathing fell into disrepute.

So says a captured Amazon who is brought before the Senator. She escapes with the help of kidnapped maiden Serena who stabs the Senator in the back with a candlestick. I'm not sure where the blade came from after the candle fell out, but you go along with it.
Serena was just a young child when her village was attacked by a bloodthirsty Roman General turned Governor. Her father was killed, her sister was kidnapped, and her mother's death rested on her shoulders. Her mother was hung from a tree and Serena was underneath her for support. With her bare feet she had to stand under her mother while hot coals were lit on the ground. Of course her mother died and she was taken away as a slave.
After her escape she rides and trains with the Amazons. Only then does she discover that her grandmother was a great Amazon warrior and she is prophesized to be even greater.
Well there is a lot of sexy costumes, but little sex. Oh there's a whole lot of female nudity for those of us who enjoy sex with our violoence. My favorite chick had no lines, but was only instructed to pour the bath water slowly. Check out the headlights on that little honey WOW!
Anyway there's a whole lot of fighting in this movie, in the woodds and in the gladiator arena. In the end Serena gets her revenge by fighting the governor himself in the arena. After her victory she makes her speech; "And if I hear that anymore women are abused in this town, I will come back and kill you all!"
This is not a great movie, but it's good enough to pop in the old DVD player every now and then.

Contrary to the two previous entries, I found Blue Sub 6 to have an original and well developed plot. While some areas could be better explained (the full scoop on Zorndyke's war on humanity), most questions can be answered. For instance, the ships may have RADAR, they mat not. Who knows what state of repair they are in. RADAR is also no good for underwater targets, which is where the enemy comes from. Underwater. They have Sonar, but these are living things we are talking about. No moving parts. Quiet. Or, the it might be as simple as getting caught with our pants down. Anyway, in a city covered i water, I saw no place for a RADAR site. Any JDF radar sites would have been destroyed with the tide. It might be the future, my little friend, but that does not mean advancement. Look at the Mideval era compared to Rome. If anything, there was technological regression there...thanks to the church.

Insightful anime production

Honestly, after viewing this anime, in my opinion, this is a great anime. Back in 1998 and 1999, the technology in creating the special effects is considered as a supernova because of the impression that it led to development of similar special effects in other anime in the later years. The special effects created by computer technology is bravo. 2D and 3D can be developed harmoniously. I find the story fanastic. Solely robots or fightings can be boring in some other anime. Without the cause of the story seems vague in some other anime. Excitement is entertaining. However without the underlying meaning as a support in some other anime, the story looks dry. Blue Submarine No.6 contains lots of elements which can give something that other anime lack. Because this is the predecessor of Last Exile so the fans of Last Exile must love this anime.

So the world is at an end due to the melting of the polar ice caps (a quite plausible scenario). A mad scientist has begun to engineer aquatic mutants for unknown reasons, and humankind is on the verge of extinction, with a last hope- a group of submarines manned by the best naval forces all over the world.
It seems a bit contrived at first, but Blue Submarine 6 engaged me in it's story far more than I thought it would. At first look, it might come off as a simple war anime series. Thankfully, the series is not as one dimensional, and far more realistic (at least in my eyes) than any far-off mecha space war (see: Gundam). The apocalyptic landscape and philosophical questions addressed were enough to hold my interest, and the jazz and blues music were a good complement to the underwater sea battles (a refreshing change from the oft-overused jpop and classical tunes of other series) as well as the more thoughtful bits.
The CGI was also done well, the animation is clean, and overall the series is worth a watch.

And The Search For Joshua Continues....

Brought to us from Gonzo Studio (Full Metal Panic, etc.), they bring the much loved manga series "Chrono Crusade" by Daisuke Moriyama, to life. While the anime series is not exactly like the manga itself, I believe that Gonzo is doing a good job so far with the series.
Reaching the climatic ending of the series, Rosette, Chrono and Azmaria begin their journey to San Fransisco to search for Joshua Christopher. Along the way, many things and plot twists come to pass, making the story even more twisting to the viewers mind.
The relationship between Rosette and Chrono deepens over the mighty night time view of San Fransisco and we also learn more of Stella, the jewel witch, and of her scared past. Aion, as always, makes appearances and reveals more about his plot to destroy the world.
Though this anime is not well seen by some of Moriyama's fans, I believe Gonzo has done a very good job capturing the world of Chrono Crusade. Presenting the characters we know and love from the manga, Gonzo has brought the humor we have come to know them for. The indepth story of the battle between hell, heaven, and earth is presented in such an intense fashion. Also, the anime is drawn with quality and time.
Any anime fan should give this series a try! Good work Gonzo, looking foreword to volume 6!

Gothic visuals, intense set-pieces, but the film lacks heart and soul

CRIMSON RIVERS II: ANGELS OF THE APOCALYPSE
[Les Rivières Pourpres II: Les Anges de l'Apocalypse]
(France/Italy/UK - 2003)
Aspect ratio: 2.39:1 (Super 35)
Theatrical soundtracks: Dolby Digital / DTS
Whilst investigating a bizarre murder inside an ancient monastery, two detectives (Jean Reno and Benoît Magimel) stumble on a series of killings related to a mysterious cult and its charismatic leader (Christopher Lee).
Olivier Dahan's stylish sequel (cf. the original CRIMSON RIVERS, 2000) sacrifices the original film's emotional content for a series of intense set-pieces, which mutes the intended effect. The visceral impact is formidable, and the Gothic visuals are a treat, but it fails to work on anything but the most superficial level, and Reno seems to be coasting on auto-pilot. Magimot is one of France's sexiest and most talented young actors, and he steals the film from his high-profile co-stars, though Lee is given little to do, and his presence fails to ignite the expected sparks. Excellent makeup and visual effects.

Don't judge Crimson Rivers, the first film by this follow-up. That was well made/directed. This film, although presenting what could have been a moody atmospheric mystery, is not at the same level. Uninvolving sometimes confusing direction is the downfall. It will provide a taste of the "Crimson Rivers" world but does not reach the same intriguing level.

** 2004. Written by Luc Besson and directed by Olivier Dahan. Two policemen try to understand why a group of months are committing ritual murders in the neighborhood of an old monastery. After the excellent first episode The Crimson Rivers directed by Mathieu Kassovitz in 2000, ANGELS OF THE APOCALYPSE is a big letdown. Christopher Lee undoubtedly accepted his role to pay his taxes, the French pop star Johnny Hallyday slurs four words, the whole movie seems illuminated by blue, red and green spotlights and there are some hectic months making a lot of diarrhoeal Chinese jumps in the background. Inadvisable.

Here come the meta-humans!
Rating (4)
Date: 2008-08-13
1 out of 1 customers found this reveiw helpful
Sometime in the near future, there is a new form of evolution occuring within human beings.
This next stage of human capabilities enable them to convert thoughts into psychic energy.
These beings or "metahumans" are also known as "E's". Despite having tremendous powers, they are also being viewed as a dangerous group by the population and are sought to be driven away.
These powerful human beings are the world's deadliest new weapons. Will they have the power to save people on earth? Or perhaps it may be destructive power which can lead humanity towards devastation. "E's Otherwise" is an adventure driven story surrounded by mystery, drama, and action.
Kai Kudo is a 15 year old member of the AESES special psychic force unit. He decides to help them with hopes of finding more research in finding a cure for Hikaru, his ailing beloved sister.
Even though Kai is a new member of AESES, he is receiving special treatment from Eiji, the head of the organization.
Members of AESES can not be oblivious to the fact that Kai is receiving this special treatment, therefore rivalry among the members commence.
In the the first episode, Kai arrives at Ashurum where he joins the elite AESIS unit. From there he receives training from Eiji with hopes of discovering more of his psychic potential.
In Ashurum, Kai meets with other characters such as Shen-Lon, Shen-Lu, Chris, Ruri, and Tsubaki. These members are all training together with hopes of finding and joining other "E's".
In the second episode, Kai is dispatched into his first mission. There is an attack in the city called Gald where Yuuki, a wandering fighter, meets an underground group of psychics.
Even though the city is supposed to be evacuated, Kai spots Yuuki and finds that there are still people trying to escape from the city.
From there they find this underground group of psychics who tell Yuuki he must find the Calvaria Sacrament, which is a key to the survival of "E's", as well as for human beings on the planet.
The artistic style of "E's Otherwise" is brilliantly done by Studio Pierrot.
Each member of AESES is created and detailed with brightness which is balanced by their uniforms which are reminiscent to Japanese and European military uniforms during World War II.
The music in "E's Otherwise" can be described as a futuristic rock combined with techno.
The opening theme song is an awesome techno dance track called "Jouhou" by Suitei Shojo.
The ending song is also a great music track called "Tonight-Midnight" by Chicochair.
As for the audio, the Japanese dialogue is done very well with also notable characteristics in the English dialogue track, although at some times the English voices did not seem to be as serious.
There are quite a number of extras on the DVD. This would include a clean opening and clean closing animation scenes, actual production sketches, Japanese promotion spots, ADV previews and DVD credits.
"E's Otherwise" is a great animation due to its creative artistic style combined with the action packed yet mysterious storyline.
The characters (each with their own unique psychic abilities) in the story are interesting in that each episode would fill in just a part of the story, meanwhile leaving the rest to our imaginations.

E's otherwise is a show that is bringing something new to the table. This is a very unique and original anime show with a great storyline, wonderful animation, and characters that are on point. A show that seems to be a sure masterpiece in the future It still has some pieces that make it kind of doubtful. In these first episodes there's good action but not enough for this type of series It doesn't have to be action packed but enough like in the witch hunter robin series. The story is pretty good this seems like a show that progresses into an addictive show that you can't wait to see. The animation really shows when the E's use their powerful minds to create holding cell's for criminals out of fountain water and fight physically and mentally either one can create major damage. In conclusion this show is good but not great it should get better after it gets deeper into the story the only major flaw in this is not enough action It needs to be not too much but not too little.

To begin, this anime starts off very heavy and begins to turn into a light action series.
This anime is kind of like X-Men. There are a group of psychics (or mutants) who receives special assignments and during these assignments, they opposed by humans. A great relation to X-Men. This show offers many types interests. It contains action, love, comedy (especially the fifth episode). The story is very cool. I can't get over how upset I was to see how these psychics were treated in t he second episode. I won't spoil it because I know all anime fans will love this show. It contains five episodes. 125 mintues which is very rare these days. I can't believe how many episodes these companies have started to put on dvds. (ADVFILMS Gantz 2 episodes 50 mintues) It is completely ridiculous. But, I really have enjoyed this show. It is a action show, but after the first two episodes, this dvd goes to the emotional style of anime. Maybe I am wrong, but this underreated anime seems to be the best anime to come out so far this year next to Samurai Champloo.
If you like this. You will love S.Cry.Ed and if this is not serious enough. I recommend Gantz, but be warned, it is not for the soft stomach.

Disappointing End to an Otherwise Enjoyable Story
Rating (4)
Date: 2009-08-29
Firstoff, let me say that I came into Gate Keepers in the wrong way - by first seeing and loving its OAV sequel, GateKeepers 21. Therefore I had certain hopes and expectations for this, the original TV series. Since this final volume retains its likeable cast and excellent overall production values, I felt compelled to give it at least a four-star rating on those merits alone; but its lack of real closure and especially glaring inconsistences with its sequel, set thirty years in the future ( hence the "21" in the title, refering to the new century ), left me cold and unsatisfied.
The three episodes here move swiftly enough to closure - maybe a little too much so for the vastness of the problem to be resolved - with few if any real surprises in plot or character. Reiji Kageyama's background as the main villian of the piece is finally explored adequately; but his eventual end is somewhat muddled and obscure. Fittingly, the Shun - Reiko - Kaoru triangle is also resolved, in a manner apparantly satisfactory to all. Possibly the greatest treat is finally getting to see if the lunkheaded Bancho really possesses the Gate power Shun thinks he does! It all wraps up about as you would expect, but leaving untold almost ALL of the real details behind the invaders; relying on a very few generalizations about their "true" nature that does little or nothing to truly solve the problem. You would think that was so they could continue the story in GateKeepers 21 - but you would largely be wrong!
*SPOILER ALERT!*
Though not really a part of the review of this volume, I'd like to mention the most obvious inconsistinces between the way things stand at its end and the beginning of the sequel. In the 21st Century, the by-now very reduced Japanese Defence Forces of A.E.G.I.S. are LED by the very SAME Reiji Kageyama - how did THIS happen?? ( I at LEAST thought we'd get a glimmer of change or remorse from him in the course of Gate Keepers - but NO! ) The protagonist, a girl who calls herself Ayane Isuzu, is actually the daughter of Shun and ??? ( Quite apparantly NOT Reiko! ) She has inherited his "Ultra Cyclone Chop" as well as an unexplained hate for HIM that he felt for HIS father; but nothing of Reiko's Gate abilities. Physically and emotionally she most resembles Megumi of the original team, making for fascinating speculation regarding the eventual outcome of Megumi's resentment of and "rivalry" with Reiko. At least the invaders are actually explaned and developed perhaps more fully than in the original. Maybe somewhere there exists a manga that explains all this and bridges these formidable gaps!

What a wonderful conclusion to this great anime. I feel that the ending was very stereotypical of anime but not too much so. The dialogue is tastful and there is the slightest bit of fan service at the end that wraps everything up. I was slightly disapointed that the ending didn't do a little more with Megumi, but i let it pass when Rurriko and Shun finally let each other know how they felt. It also doesn't do a good job of setting up GK21 but ill get over it. All in all its a great dvd with good action and everything a good anime should have.
