Great Godannar volume
Rating (5)
Date: 2006-07-16
This time I thought I'd let someone else do a review first for a change so I could see what others thought of this volume. I fully agree that this volume is very improved compared to the previous 2 volumes, but I also agree that it's unfortunately still not as good as the 1st or 3rd volumes of Godannar. I give this 5 stars anyway because I give all the Godannars 5 stars, though. If I could give fractional stars though then maybe not all the Godannars would get a perfect 5 stars.
The first episode started out really slow and the fighting only started near the end, but after that this DVD is pretty much constant nonstop fighting until the end, at which point they are still in the middle of fighting. So the final DVD looks really promising. Perhaps if the first episode on this disc did not count and the last 5 episodes of Godannar are looked at as a whole (though I've not yet seen the last 3) the ending of Godannar could be back up to the level of the 1st and 3rd DVDs.
The ending sequence changed in this volume and I thought it was good. I'm hoping the opening sequence changes for the final volume, there are a couple of subtle indications that it might (it already changed a little once in Season 2, after Anna got her new robot). I'm constantly annoyed that the opening sequence is all blurry because it was not mastered properly by ADVision so it better be fixed by the end!
I agree that the dub quality has been good and bad at times for Godannar, kind of inconsistent. Oh well. I watch each volume of Godannar once in English to see what it's like but all the other times I watch it's always in Japanese. The English track surround audio mix seems to vary as well. I made a note once before that Godannar Volume 1 had a hugely boosted bass track that the other volumes did not have. In this volume, something weird is going on with some of the English track music, they sound as if some weird or different surround processing algorithm was used on them. The dialogue voices though sound normal. It's not a big deal, but ADVision seems inconsistent with their sound recording and dubbing procedures.
I thought that the Blade Gainer was going to blow up in this volume, but it didn't. Hurray! From the preview it looks like there is going to be Godannar VS Blade Gainer 3 in the final volume. I think Blade Gainer is going to blow up then, though. Poor Blade Gainer, don't blow up!! :)

GODANNAR BACK WITH A VENGENCE!!!

First of all, before we get to the beginning, let's get to the ending. Wow! Volume 6 ended with a bang! I didn't see it coming at all. Without giving it all away, the whole thing with the base and the surprise characters at the end was awesome. But back to the beginning. It started slow building character and emotion and then BAM! the action hit and it didnt stop for probably 30 minutes only to take a short break and then start up again and run to the end. Action is great but what made it even better was that the story was moved forward and we found out so much. Much more than the previous volume which although it had our Dannar Base characters in it, they were more backround. It was nice to see them back in the forefront. As a matter of fact, all the stuff they did in the last one was laying groundwork for this one. Also the new songs in this volume were moving and really added to the battles. I hope to hear them again in the next volume but the cirumstances will be different so I doubt that they will have those songs again. Although I really liked this volume, I just can't give it 5 stars. In previous reviews I have said that the english dub and translation is done very well. However, it seemed in this volume like some of the voice actors had just returned from a long break and had forgotten their voices. Luckily it only lasted for a few lines, but I found it very noticable, even after a second viewing. Also the english dub had way too much "harsh" cursing for no reason. It really stood out from the previous volumes. Now I'm not trying to be Mr. Moral, I know there has been cursing before and I feel its been warranted like when Shizuru dies and so forth, but in this volume the language was used to translate words and phrases that have nothing to do with cursing. It was really out of place. That along with extras that gave us videogame clips INSTEAD OF Character, Mechanical, and Beast files was why I thought this disc was 4 stars. Overall This volume was really amazing. Ive watched it 3 times now in Japanese and English. The only preview Ive ever watched was the season 2 preview at the end of volume 3 because I always wanted to go in fresh to the next volume. After the way this volume ended, I threw that rule out the window and watched the volume 7 preview and it does not disappoint! Daybreak attack
Rating (4)
Date: 2008-12-20
The concept is pretty simple -- Robin-Hood-style pirates on Mars, in an unspecified future time when the whole planet is covered in seas.
And fortunately its simplicity is part of "The Mars Daybreak: Volume 1's" charm -- it has nice straightforward animation, plenty of action, magical necklaces and big underwater mechas. And while some of the characters are still unformed (the snotty Vestemona), the imaginative underwater adventures and likable pirates are plenty of fun.
Frequently unemployed dockworker Gram gets swept off a city-ship while rescuing a pal. His necklace starts glowing, and he is scooped up by a mysterious "round buckler" (read: underwater mecha).
Unfortunately Earth Forces attacks him, thinking that he's with the pirate submarine Ship of Aurora -- and soon Gram finds himself as the Ship of Aurora's newest pirate. He quickly becomes invaluable to the crew (for his super-powerful Round Buckler AND his brilliant cooking skills), but is unaware that a childhood friend named Vestemona -- now an Earth Forces cadet -- has returned to Mars and is obsessed with getting him to mend his ways.
To make matters worse, his new buddy Junior is obsessed with piloting a Round Buckler, and sneaks off in Gram's without permission -- only to run into Vestemona and the other Earth Forces. And Gram himself bumps into Vess when the both of them are having a day off, only to run into some nasty trouble in their old neighborhood. To make matters worse, the president of Mars has become obsessed with snaring the Ship of Aurora.
"The Mars Daybreak" has no deep message to impart, no tormented heroes, no realistic action, no extremely complex storylines, and (admittedly) not a hugely imaginative concept. But surprisingly, its humility is one of the reasons it's such an endearing series -- it's a simply adventure yarn with good-hearted pirates and a pleasant teenage hero. Nothing more, nothing less.
The writers do weave in some other stories -- Gram wowing the crew with his cooking, the pirates being hunted by an obsessed Vess, and a hilarious subplot about a hit-and-run sub that scrapes the Ship of Aurora. And despite the straightforwardness of the episodic stories, there are some hanging threads (such as Gram's necklace and mystery mecha) that promise to provide some interesting stories in the future.
And despite the outlaws-being-hunted focus, the writers include plenty of humour and lighthearted dialogue ("Look, we come bearing gifts. LUNCH!"), political strife, and a future Mars dominated by a crumbling economy and rusty city-ships on an endless sea. And courtesy of the surprisingly realistic mecha technology (it does make sense underwater) they manage some slam-bang underwater action, with lots of grappling holds and explosions.
And Gram is a likable hero -- light-hearted, friendly, kind and honest, although he openly admits to having no life goals except making enough money to live on. The pirates are a colourful bunch as well (stern female captain, Sea Witch, talking cat, pink-haired boy, icy pilot) as are the Earth Forces officers (including the aptly-named Captain Doolittle).
The one flaw? Vestemona may have more in store for her, but in the first five episodes she just seems like a self-righteous brat who despises everything, and even tries to lecture a penniless Gram about his new ob.
The first volume of "The Mars Daybreak" is a fun, unpretentious little action/sci-fi series, with some hanging mysteries and a likable hero.

VERY HAPPY I TOOK A CHANCE ON THIS ONE!!

I had a gift card that was burning a hole in my pocket, so i took a chance on this series, and the first volume didnt let me down. I saw the complete collection at Borders and thought it looked interesting, and the animation looked well done so i went on youtube and watched the first 2 episodes and they were very engaging and fun, so I went back and purchased the whole collection. Ive only watched the first volume so far which is why Im commenting on only this volume. The characters are fun and interesting and the storyline is solid. Serious but not so much that you cant have a good time. I watched the subtitled version on youtube which was good, so I watched the english dubb instead and it was very good. In every episode I was engaged and the time flew by, if there wasnt action then there was good story and character developement. Speaking of characters, I believe this is really the main strength of the series. All are likable and the ones who havent had a lot of screen time are around enough not to have been forgotten and Im sure there time is coming. From the "Robin Hood" type Pirates of the Ship of Aurora to the Army Cadets of Earth who defend against them, its hard to pick a favorite character, and the last episode on this volume opens the world up even wider.

NANAKA IS 17 AGAIN
Rating (2)
Date: 2006-08-02
There's a new girl in town to take Nenji's love away from Nanaka. Not only does this girl have the whole 6 year-old act down, she really IS 6 years old! Her name is Kuriko and she becomes attached to Nenji when he rescues her from some bullies. Besides that, she misses her brother who is studying in America, so of course, she transfers her love to Nenji! She can't stop hanging on him so Nanaka begins to get jealous. The next two episodes focus on the school trip that Nenji and Nanaka take to visit old Japanese temples. While there, Nanaka reverts back to her 17 year-old personality! You would think Nenji would be happy about this, but imagine his surprise when he discovers that he likes her 6 year-old self better. And of course behind all this is Amemiya, who has feelings for Nenji but with all the kids around Nenji, can't find any space to manuever. In the last episode, Nenji comes down with a cold, and the three girls all vie to be the one that takes the best care of him, which in turn leads to his torture!
I thought Volume 1 of Nanaka 6/17 was ok and this second volume is just more of the same really. With the advent of Kuriko into the storyline, it pretty much ended the series for me though. One annoying kid per anime is one of my requirements on whether I like a show. Not to mention the fact that a 6 year-old having feelings for a high-schooler brings up some very uncomfortable issues. One Nanaka was enough. Another problem is that the real Nanaka is still a unsympathetic character. She's just out and out mean and it makes you hope that her amnesia continues and that Nenji hooks up with Amemiya. It's kinda bad when you hope things DON'T work out for the main character! If you can't establish a rapport between the characters and the audience, keeping interest in the anime is a lost cause.
