Not enough repetition

Although the content of this program is excellent, I found it frustrating because the phrases are only stated once and there are not enough pauses to allow interaction from the listener. For this reason I prefer the Learn in your car French series that states each phrase in English and then twice in French allowing time in between for the listener to practice and interact with the tape.

Living Language has been around for a long time (my mom knew about them!), but I guess there's a reason for that. These guys really know what they're doing. I loved the CD and the guidebook, and after studying with it, I felt very confident on my trip to France last fall. It's a great way to learn. PS There's even a dictionary included in the package!

I found this cd set to be an excellent review. I had studied French for years and just needed a thorough refresher course before a trip to Paris. I would recommend it to anybody who has studied a romance language in the past. I particularly like it because I can listen to it in the car and don't need to refer to a book. The phrase book is very sparse so I would not recommend it to anybody who has not previously studied a romance language.

This is a 6 CD set which says "learn in your car", "no reading required". I have a good ear and a friend from france staying with me. Yet, I am having difficulty because words and phrases are said only once and at normal speaking speed. A phrase such as "Enchante de faire votre connaissance" (pleased to meet you) is never broken down by syllable. This is extremely difficult to follow while driving a car. This set feels as though it was designed to go with a book while sitting at a desk not at the wheel of a car. At the same time, it seems like it would be excellent for a review, someone who already knows all the words and how to pronounce. They do provide a small book. The words are in alphabetical order by lesson. But the words on the cd are not introduced to you in alphabetical order. That means, while driving, you are not going to find the word they are saying before they go on to the next word. This set really needs to be reworked for a beginner or it should be advertised as a review for someone already knowledgeable.

Buy this book early
Rating (3)
Date: 2008-12-23
I bought this book when daughter was a senior in high school. I should have bought it when she was in kindergarten. Many of the strategies named are that long-term. Others tell you have to "game" the system (like not putting a lot into 529 plans). With the financial meltdown today, and colleges having less money to give out for financial aid, I'm not sure that would have been such sound advice 15 years ago. WE actually found we could not use a lot of the advice in the book but, as always, YMMV.

The best feature of this book is that it goes through the FAFSA application line by line and explains how each answer can affect your aid eligibility. However, the book I purchased had a misprint - page 64 was printed twice. Page 64 appears before and after page 65 - page 66 is missing. Be sure to check before you buy and if you already bought the version with the misprint, exchange it at the place of purchase.

The Most Important Prep Course

Parents spend thousands on SAT preparation, tens of thousands on a private school education, and then leave their assets to the tender mercies of the Board of Education. Don't allow your financial future to be savaged by the struggle to cover ever-increasing college costs. It is essential to know how your answers to the 103 questions that comprise the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will be interpreted. I read Sallie Mae's book, which highly recommends Sallie Mae loans - calls them an "investment". They are not, they are a long-term debt. Kalman Chaney offers unbiased advice for maximizing your awards, minimizing your debt, and weighing your college choices with more tools (like cost-to-attend and likelihood of providing aid) in hand. It is an eye opening book, I ordered the annual update, too. It is a bit overwhelming, and even if you decide to hire a college funding advisor to help you with this process, you should still buy the book.

Struggling to get through it

After several months, I'm not quite halfway through the book, because just about anything else is more interesting and will supersede this on my reading list. That's probably not Princeton's fault. I could use a guide about one-third the length of this book.
Less conscientious readers would probably get a lot out of this by skipping many sections, but the college aid process is entirely new to me, so I'm skipping precious little.
The review also points out (quite correctly, I'm sure) that the parent's relationship with the financial aid officer is by nature--civil, respectful, cordial--but adversarial. The whole thought that I'll have to arrange the financial facts of my family to my best advantage is, for reasons that are difficult to explain, discouraging.

This book became the "Bible for financial aid", it was a great tool for guidance into the aid process. I was able to take the information and negotitate a better aid package for my son and daughter. Thanks to the Princeton review! P.S. my daughter received 9 letters of acceptance and over $14,000.00 in scholarships and grants.

Incredible straight forward advice
Rating (5)

I have read this book cover to cover and continue to refer to it as we prepare for our own book, Riding the Tiger: Leading Through Learning in Turbulent Times that comes out in August. The lessons share and the insights have helped us to make the right decisions to launch our new book. I wish I had read this book before my first book, Leadership Without Borders, came out.

A Must Have if You Actually Want Your Book to Be Read
Rating (5)
Date: 2009-10-04
I have read other publicity and marketing books that were somewhat helpful but this book absolutely blew them out of the water. I went through it slowly because there were so many notes to take. I'm an industry insider and still I found myself learning some new tidbit on every page. After reading Publicize Your Book, I feel confident in my abilities to take an active and effective role in getting my soon-to-be releaesed debut notices.
There were tons of very practical information. Reading this book is almost as good as sitting next to a publicist day in and day out, learning the business of publicity. Excellent resource. I can't recommend it enough.

A good book for some authors

I have mixed feelings about this book. Publicize Your Book! does provide a nice overview of the publication process that will be helpful for first time authors. The book does not focus on any one type of book. It is divided between non-fiction and fiction titles, though there is some advice that will clearly only apply to non-fiction works even if that isn't always made clear in the text.
The advice seems to be geared more towards authors of adult books, with less information of value to authors of childrens or YA titles. For example, there isn't a single word here about school visits by authors, a big method of publicizing books for the under 18 set. Even the library visit information that is here is pretty slim.
Self-published authors will likely find that a lot of information here only applies to traditionally published books, but there may be a tidbit that can be picked up here and there.
Online publication methods are a tough thing to present in a book, because the online world moves so fast, that almost as soon as a book is in print, its information is dated. There is still some valid information in the Online Marketing chapter, but there is also a lot of dated information.
I think this book probably has the most value to an author of a non-fiction adult book being published by a traditional publisher. The rest of us need to weed through the information that we already know and the information we never needed to know, to get to the good stuff, but there is some good advice here.

Helpful but too broad
Rating (3)

Do you have a book published? Do you plan on having one published? Then yes, read this book.
Of course, what the description fails to say is that this book assumes you have a publisher, publicist, editor, agent, and your entire marketing crew. Is this a bad thing? No, but it would have been nice to know that is what this book is about before turning to the first page. But that aside, this book is helpful regardless of your publishing status. It provides examples of good times and bad, all things to consider and think about. Countless references, links, and resources to continue looking into once you have finished the book.
The bad? It's a bit too broad at times. There is a section about getting on the Oprah show. Well, since this would be the top wish for any published author, it would be nice to focus on easily achievable goals. There are any blurbs about "studying" shows you like in order to see if you are a fit for them or not - this is irrelevant because shows are always looking for diverse content and the simple fact that watching a show won't help you study unless you know what to look for.
If you have a publisher, publicist, and an entire entourage, this book is a must buy. If you are a self-publisher, this book will still offer you many hints and tips and should be read, but may end up being a skim - skipping sections that discuss solutions to book tours when your tour guide isn't acting up to par.
There is no right way to get your book out there and to make it successful. This book will expand your mindset. Is it the best? No, but it's worth looking into.

I bought this book to see if there were things that i could be doing differently. I am a self-published author that always looks for other ways to get my work noticed. As much as I enjoyed reading this, I often felt like things were padded. I want the facts and channels I need to go through, for me, this just was not the one.
