a rich, clear-eyed celebration of life & family

It took me several weeks to build up the confidence to actually buy Kevin Young's "Dear Darkness." After all, the book is currently only available in hardcover and $27 is no small chunk of change to spend on a poetry book (especially in this bum economy).

But after wearing a hole into my copy of "To the Confederate Dead" (the fantastic book Young published previous to "Dear Darkness"), I knew I would have to suck it up and just buy the darn thing. And I can tell you know, that it is absolutely worth it.

Clocking in at nearly 200 pages, "Dear Darkness" is a beautifully hefty book, rich in tone and language. Dealing with the aftermath of his father's death, Young -- an "only son of an only son" -- takes careful pains to illuminate and celebrate everything which fills his life. This means poems about aunties, uncles and cousins, as well as odes to catfish, gumbo and sweet potato pie, alongside poetry riffing on blues songs, childhood bullies and contemporary life in the big city, among numerous other topics.

Young is able to brilliantly write about his past and his present, balancing the amber glow of nostalgia with the sharp angles of reality. His work is not without humor or without pathos, and his voice and approach is almost unrelentingly fresh and honest. Sometimes when I read poems built around a theme (of which there are many in this book), I can tell which poems are the "anchor poems" and which were just thrown into the mix to flesh out the theme. But with Young, each piece dazzles, each pieces adds depth and contrast.

"Dear Darkness" continues Young's stellar tradition of beautiful, earned, solid books of poetry, and I highly recommend this book to anyone itching for an opportunity to see their world with fresh eyes.

Let me count the number of ways stars can destroy us...
Rating (5)
Date: 2010-02-09

A friend of mine loaned this book to me and I loved it, so I bought my own copy. The author reviews different ways in which the earth or life on the earth can be destroyed due to the life and death of stars. The writing is engaging and the science is explained well and in ways that can be understood by a lay person. There were a few times when I felt I wanted more information, but the author had provided enough general information to allow me to look up the details further online. I have always been interested in Astronomy and this was a book that rekindled my interest enough that I now have become a regular reader of a few blogs on Astronomy, including The Bad Astronomy blog by this author.

Readable to a general audience, but never speaks down to it's readers. Fascinating for me, as a non-scientist. This book is both terrifying and calming, as Plait tells us all of the ways the universe could kill us, but probably won't... yet.

I love this book. The best NF read I've had since 'The World Without Us.' Plaitt's humor is more subtle (and thus more effective) here than in 'Bad Astonomy.'.....keep em coming. I'll be there to pick every new book by the real Dr. Phil.

Light yet filling

There is plenty of science here but the doomsday scenarios are presented so that anyone can understand (enjoy?) them. Even though I (as a Sci-Fi nut and amateur astronomer) had encountered much of the information before, I enjoyed how the whole range of, well, 'death from the skies' was covered. From meteors to the aging of the universe, it's all here. Also well explained are the processes that can end the life of a star. And if they occur close enough, how it would affect us. In some events, you are doomed but have a bit of time to appreciate it before the fatal wave arrives. You get an overall picture that expands your awareness of our place in the cosmos.

In London, vampire hunter Dawn Madison leads her team on a mission to destroy the Underground. They have captured a female master who they interrogate; learning there is another master who, like their prisoner, can shapeshift.

At Queenshill School, the Underground turned the coeds into undead teens who are willing to die to rescue their female master from Dawn. Dawn's team leader and lover Costin remains bound to Jonah's vampire body, which is costing him his Soul Traveler power at a time he needs every resource he possesses to defeat the Underground as he has gone under the school's ground in search of the master.

Following the Los Angeles Underground mission accomplished, Dawn's search for the London Underground continues in the latest Vampire Babylon tale (see The Path of Razors), but the culture is radically different yet as dark and gritty. Dawn remains a lean mean fighting machine but since that short stretch as a vampire turned back to human, she struggles with an internal fuse that ignites too easily. Complex relations make the Vampire Babylon series a top notch urban fantasy filled with twists, turns and challenges fans have come to expect from Chris Marie Greene.

Wicked and Delicious
Rating (5)
Date: 2010-08-19

Delicious is about Luc Traverson and Alyssa Deveraux. Luc knows what he wants and is one track minded about it. He wants the white picket fence, stay at home wife and kids galore. Only problem is he was pronounced sterile years ago. He has an inexplicable attraction to Alyssa and owes her a favor. He is a famous chef and he agreed to work for her opening week at her new restaurant. Alyssa owns a new restaurant and a strip club. Luc can't get over the strip club fact, his preconceived notions about strippers is what holds him back from going after Alyssa. His preconceived notions are biased, discriminative and untrue. Luc has to learn the hard way that Alyssa is just what he wants and needs.

Alyssa has been in the previous wicked series. I was very interested in hearing her story and to see where Luc ended up. Their attraction is passionate and uncontrollable. There are things that Luc doesn't understand or want to understand. This book has a good pace and it is interesting. I enjoyed catching up with previous characters as well. There is someone out to get Alyssa, Luc must let go of his prejudice and they both learn the value of honesty. Alyssa follows her heart and sets out to seduce. Alyssa is nothing if not determined =)
Recommended to anyone who likes erotic romance suspense.

Deliciously Frustrating
Rating (3)
Date: 2010-08-03

I was a little disappointed by this book. In a lot of ways it lived up to what I thought I was going to be. . . HOWEVER, I really go annoyed by Luc and his constant perception of Alyssa being a "whore." His stereotypical mindset was exhausting to read, repeatedly. It took too long for his small brain to wrap around the fact that Alyssa could actually be a smart savvy business woman. Even after learning she encouraged the girls that worked for her to go back to school and even helped them find assistance. Did he honestly think she would not know anything about running a business- strip club though it maybe- so there for she wouldn't really have to be smart? Yes, it was a concept quite unfamiliar for Luc to have-you know giving someone the benifit of the doubt.

Everything she did that screamed success and educated decisions, ie being able to open up an amazing restaurant- he perceived as woman who got client help finding great deals by selling herself-he is constantly thinking the worst of her and getting angry at her. AND honestly- he's 'sterile' so he thinks absolutely nothing of protecting them with the chance that he could get Alyssa pregnant. Just because he has/had physical issues does not mean it was a zero chance to have a baby. He however makes up for it with all his pouting and temper tantrum like ways.

Instead of being upfront with Alyssa when he holds this secret- the whole time thinking the woman he 'loves' or could love- again is a whore passing off someone else's child to be his, only he is more than happy to take the roll of father. Where does this guy get off? I just felt really sorry for Alyssa-until her stupidity about how 'what if's' got in her way. On more than one occasion when you would think she could not handle more insult- she goes back for more.

It was such a push and pull of a chaotic, un-trusting and sometimes violent relationship, that it was hard, by the end to believe the honesty of their "love." You would think that with a past like her's-Alyssa would have been less likely to allow Luc to treat her the way he does. Instead, it takes him using her aggressively, for sex out of jealousy for her to tell him to never touch her or come near her. . . Later it's when she finds out he thought she'd been lying about the baby's father and she realizes, again how horribly Luc thinks about her.

I gave it three stars because, for what it is it did deliver in certain areas-It was a steamy read, and for the first few chapters lived up to my expectations- but the ending itself was just too much. I felt a little cheated and felt like Luc & Alyssa's relationship needed to flourish a little more before I'd by it.

What a Disappointment!

I'm sorry to say, this was bad from beginning to end...and just about page-for-page in between. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater. I liked the first two books in this series enough to read Delicious. Even though the first two were flawed, the author has a real talent for writing many compelling scenes and somewhat keeping the story together. But this just failed. The internal dialogue of the main characters was so consistently irritating, I can't believe I finished the book. I guess I'm not the type to quit in the middle and I just kept hoping it would get better. I know that there are more books planned for these characters and I sincerely hope Black puts in the effort to make the stories somewhat believable and to give the protagonists enough story to be interesting rather than repeating the same pat/absurd mental conflict over and over (and over!) again. Sheesh!

I am speechless.................

I am new to this author. I read the first book in the series and then this book. I should have read the middle book. There were so many references to characters and scenes in that book. I love how this author adds suspence to her storylines. This story line was just rough. I get that she is beautiful and blonde and a stripper. How is one woman the victim (or focus) of five different men. I had to suspend belief as her hell went on and on. It was too much for me. I hate to go lower than four stars on this author. I was tempted!

Awesome book

The fourth and final book of the Demon Hunting Soccer Mom exceeded my expectations. I don't know why the name of the series seems to change slightly book to book, but it is all part of the same series. Kate Conner is very real and is easy to identify with. The book jacket to an earlier book suggests Kate Conner is like Buffy becoming a soccer mom if she kept her past a secret. I think Julie Kenner's series is better. I loved this series, it is one of the best I've ever read.

More Demons!
Rating (4)
Date: 2010-05-05

Kate our demon-hunting mom is back in action. This book picks up right where the last one left off. Her dead husband is back in the body of a chemistry teacher, her daughter is training to be a hunter and her new husband now knows about demons and wants to help. Her daughter is about to celebrate her 15 birthday when all hell breaks loose on the demon front. The biggest and badest of demons is trying to get out of her husbands body and our favorite bad-ass chick is back and allowing the first of all female demons to have her body. What does this mean? Fighting the demons has gotten harder and more of Kate's non-standard life becomes less organized and more painful. I'm not sure how much further this story line can go ... but I sure am enjoying it!

I have to say that Julie Kenner is a great writer. Her book is tight, well paced and it keeps you on pins and needs the entire time.

Spoilers:

On that note, I have to say that I was disappointed with the ending and that characters. If I was a mother, with a toddler, I would not allow my husband who has already walked out of the family once due to that monsters are real, walk out again and take my toddler with him. For a Demon slayer, Kate a wuss when it comes to her man.
While I can see her husband running out once out of panic, twice is not acceptable. Time to bust out the divorce papers.
While there was the "happy ending" how happy is it?
My feelings on this series are up in the air. I will read the next in the series but if Kate's husband doesn't grow a pair, I wont be buying the rest of the series.

I just love the Kate Connors series by Julie Kenner. The books keep getting better and better an dthe most recent addition, Demon Ex-Machina, was no exception. Once again Demon-hunter, Kate Connors finds herself battling more demons. I don't want to give away any of the plot, but secrets are unveiled and Kate faces lots of challenges. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

This series of books, by Julie Kenner, are undoubtedly aimed at young teen females, but I am a male in my 60s and have enjoyed each of the so-far 5 novels in the series and am looking forward to future books. My two daughters, both well out of their teens, are enjoying them just as much. Well written and lots of fun. Just be sure to read them in order, as it's a continuing story.
