Lovely

I was a little nervous about this book since I am a new knitter, but there really are patterns for all skill levels, including beginner. The two things I particularly like about this book is that the author does in fact rank the sweaters by difficulty and that most of the patterns are shown in two or more colorways. I would like to make more than 75% of the sweaters in this book which makes it a great bargain.

Great use of color

This book has great use of color and suggestions for many interesting projects. Only downfall is directions given in European size needles so needed to look up and write down the comparable ones for the US.

Some of Jo Sharp's sweater designs are a bit outlandish for me, since I'm more conservative in dress, although I expect a good number of them, since they are colorful, unusual and eye-catching, can be quite popular. I was happy, though, to find this collection, which has something for everybody and certainly lots for me. Jo Sharp yarn is extraordinary -- quite unusual for our market, these are strong, substantial yarns that knit into luxurious garments on anywhere from the recommended size 6 needle to a size 8 or 9. They are expensive, comparatively, at $6.50 for a ball of 107 yards, but you get great coverage, and the end result is a sweater that is both durable, comfortable, easy to maintain, and versatile, not to mention warm. A whole sweater can cost about $100, which is not bad for the quality that you get. Knitting Bazaar has great designs for single colored sweaters, two colors, or the more complex trademark styles of multi-hued intarsias. Very inventive designs for the new colors added to her palette, and some wonderfully conservative styles that I can wear to work. The best of the collection, though, is Precious Jewel -- a brightly colored intarsia of op-art flowers and scrollwork. The cover style, Boheme, is also very attractive, as is the colorful Paragon. Sharp also gives us a cape, some pullovers (some in stranding or fair isle), cardigans and an attractively cabled jacket, casual wear and formal wear sweaters, cables and intarsias. Some designs are highly appropriate for new knitters, others are simple examples of intarsia or stranding for those just learning the techniques. Precious Jewel looks to be the most complex. In all, this collection is highly inventive, not so much a departure in Sharp's styles but a ripening -- and I think she's gone further into styling that is appropriate for the American market. Certainly she's one of the best designers out there, second in inventiveness only to Kaffe Fassett, who seems to be depleted as far as sweater designs, and comparable to Alice Starmore. Jo Sharp has 3 or 4 previous books, most quite good. Knitting Bazaar is a great collection, a pleasure to browse through, and well-worth adding to your knitting library.

Good but dated

This book provided a comprehensive primer on how to deal with all the issues surrounding an addition or renovation. While it offered lots of cost estimating advice and other tips, many of them were dated and not in line with the current economy. Not that I expected anything different! One thing the book didn't really cover well was the current trend toward builder/architect firms that marry both these specialities into one vendor. But all in all, a worthwhile investment for anyone considering building an addition or starting a renovation project (or both).

Perceptive writing on renovation

This is a very good book, but the subtitle needs a small addition so that it reads: "A Home Renovation Survival Guide For The Affluent". The author, a contractor in Manhattan, is expert at dealing with problems most of us never have to deal with, such as the mob-influenced/socialist-inspired New York City building code and cutthroat clients poised to fleece him with the stroke of a pen. If you've got plenty of money and you want to spend it prudently on a renovation of your home, this is the book for you. If, on the other hand, you are strapped for cash and struggling to add space for a growing family, or you are interested in doing it yourself to learn things and save money, look elsewhere. This is a book for the elite. To John Rusk, there is a right way and a wrong way to do every project. If the right way is too expensive for you, then you should forget about it until you have enough money. Now, if most of us were to follow such advice, nothing would ever get done, except in the posh neighborhoods. Still, it's interesting to read, if only to find out how the other half (other tenth) renovates. The structure is composed of three parts: Rusk lays out his theory and methods in one; the other two are fictional narratives of a pair of young marrieds--one bright and the other foolish. The foolish ones get into squabbles with everyone from the architect to the carpenter; they are unfailingly pennywise. The bright ones, after a few missteps, submit to the Rusk method, and are rewarded with an excellent renovation. These fictitious episodes are naturally less dry than the how-to sections, and make for highly enjoyable reading at times. That technical contractual stuff may go over well at the Harvard B. School, but let's face it, it's not the kind of thing you want to read when you're gearing up for a big construction project. Most people I know would rather take the contract out of contractor. "Let's get on with it!" is their rallying cry. In just a few words, Rusk masterfully sketches the character of the "good" contractor: Giovanni DeTomaso, who sits, Brutus-like, sharpening his chisels and waiting for the phone to ring. As a sometime contractor myself, I relished the scene of the irate male of the bright couple being brought to heel. Mr. DeTomaso threatens to sever a support beam that was discovered inside a wall unless Mr. Finley shows more respect. All too often, we contractors allow clients to bully us just because it's their house. And the downward spiral of the foolish couple was also gripping in a morbid sort of way, reminiscent of the reversal-of-fortune plots of Dickens or Thackeray. As I read, I thought of how the foolish element could give an edge to "This Old House" when it gets dull. Imagine a Farrah Fawcett or Mary Tyler Moore character fighting with Norm Abrams over the placement of a sink. In fact, this could easily be expanded to a full-length feature where a couple of plutocrats from Manhattan or Cambridge receives its comeuppance from an unwashed pushy pair from Queens or Medford.

Great Examples, Educational, Contractor perspective

As someone planning a remodel, I found this book to be very good reading and educational. The two examples of Good/Bad remodel are excellent. I learned alot. Then only negative thing I can say is that he had, in my opinion, a bias towards the contractors position (he is a former contractor). He tries to be fair and in general is, but with a little bias towards his former perception. That being said the book was great.

Of all the books we've ordered to educate us for our upcoming home renovation/addition, this has been the best. After I read Rusk's book, I passed it on to my husband, so we'd be on the 'same page' when evaluating contractors. Subsequently, I bought 2 more copies, for the architect we're working with & contractor-TBD. The architect's finding great value in it as well. Together, we've been using this book to help us select the best contractor for our project. Rusk's advice is terrific & has been our bible.

This book was really enjoyable. I love stories about dogs, and Roger Caras was able to find many new and unique dog stories that I had never read or even heard of, and I have quite a few old out of print books with dog stories. Very enjoyable. Very nice variety. Of course, included a story by "the master" of dog stories- Albert Payson Terhune. If you love dog stories and have never heard of Terhune, you're missing out! Terhune wrote about 100 years ago and most of his books are out of print. However, there are a few of his books, such as Lad, a Dog and Lad of Sunnybank still in print. Lad, A Dog has never been OUT of print. Great book, very enjoyable. Also check out his "sequel"- "The New Roger Caras Treasury of Great Dog Stories" with many new dog stories

If you are looking for a quick and easy fix to feline behavior problems, then this book is not for you. And frankly, you need to rethink your strategy and look at long term. There are no easy fixes to hard problems.

I have a formerly feral young cat with some behavior problems--mix that with a foster cat who chases her and you get some big ugly. I have read almost half this book over the past few days, have started some of the techniques she recommends, and I have already seen a difference.

We still have a way to go, but this evening has been more peaceful than the last two weeks combined. The cats are even napping in the same room, although of course not together. I can easily distract and redirect the aggressive cat's (the foster) stalking behavior, and my cat is already more relaxed and showing much less fear aggression.

I have been a cat person my whole life and consider myself pretty fluent in cat. There is still so much this book has taught me. The main thing being that you have to throw out your personal conception of what YOU believe is going on and really listen to and look at the cat and let her tell you. (the book helps you interpret cues) I never thought my cat would be fear aggressive as she appears (to me) to be fearless. But I now clearly see a lot of her problems come from anxiety and being uncertain, which = fear to a cat.

I have also identified behaviors which are affectionate and indicate deep trust on the part of my cat, and it's very touching to know she DOES trust me and loves me.

I have gone from being committed to hanging in there until things change to being extremely confident not just that they WILL change, but confident on HOW they will change and what I can do to get there. I have a plan, and now all I need is time and consistency.

I cannot say how highly I recommend this book, even to a life long cat person.

Best Cat Advice Book

This book is fantastic.

I took life-with-a-kitty for granted for a numbers of years until I recently adopted a stray kitten who is perfect in every way except for his nasty biting habit. After weeks of frustration, I finally decided I needed to find some advice about cat behavior. Originally, I picked up this book for its section on aggression but after the first few chapters I was hooked. The format of the book is wonderful, the information she presents about cats and their natural behaviors is astounding, and the suggestions she makes throughout the book are more than helpful. In just a few weeks, my relationship with my cat has improved tremendously. In addition to the behavior modifications I was able to do with the cat thanks to her advice, I have also learned so much about how to keep my cat happy, active, and stimulated. I never knew it was so easy! And it makes both the cat and I extremely happy.

The author believes the best way to modify your cats behavior is through positive reinforcement techniques. I have found this method to be extremely effective. However, modifying your cats behavior through positive reinforcement takes time, patience, and presence on your part. If you are not willing to be an active member in your cat's life, then you will get nowhere fast with this book. If you are willing to be attentive and active, then the rewards will be worth the effort ten times over again.

A book of things to think about
Rating (4)
Date: 2008-06-22

Even if you are not building a house, and are buying an existing house, this book has things you should be thinking about while looking, things to look at in the finish product, etc. I read this book before I bought the house we moved into, and I will be reviewing it again before our next move.

And definitely read it before deciding to build your own house. There is a lot of headache that goes with building a house, and after reading the book you might realize that it will be more fun to find a house that is done how you want rather than try to get a team of people to understand what you visualize as the idea home in your head.

We are planning our first house and have done various amounts of research. This is a good overview if you have not decided to use an architect, or sited your lot. If you have some planning already done, much of the book won't apply. There is minimal construction detail so if that is what you want, this book is not the one. It was worth the price and the read.

I thought the book had very little value. The author spent way too much time explaining why building your own home is a bad idea. Many things can go wrong. Most of us know that. How about some encouragement and problem solving ideas. Alas nothing of help. The basic theme is to hire every expert known in the trade (including tree doctor), do nothing yourself, bring lots of money (double all your estimates, then then double the total), or better yet just save yourself the time and frustration and buy an existing home.

Although I find this book very thorough in its coverage, it was not useful for me. I am trying to build my own home and was looking to 1)understand the building process and all that is involved, and 2) by understanding more about the intricacies of building, be able to cut costs and save money. It is assumed by the author that the reader is entrusting all of the work from start to finish to a contractor. This is great if you have the resources to build a top-of-the-line custom home. I don`t.

Although I do agree with the reviewer who noted the haphazard layout of the book, I found this book to be quite informative. I enjoyed the author's newspaper columns on the subject, and this book comprises an effective guide for anyone thinking of taking the plunge. From day one, people tell you, "Avoid new construction"... but this book reveals that it can be done, and done well.

If you have already made the decision to skip the stress of a traditional wedding, then this book is not for you. This book provides a very broad overview of eloping, but doesn't give you enough information on any topic to be useful. I had really hoped to find a book with timelines, budget tracking and useful tips and ideas. This book didn't have anything along those lines. This book is really designed for someone who hasn't decided to do a destination wedding yet and wants some more information.
