I loved this book. I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole book completely through. It will be one of those treasured books in my library. One of those books you would never consider parting with. If you want to read a great book with a great story I suggest you read it. I guarantee you will love it as much as I did.

Gives peace

If we had to think that death was the end, for most of us, what would be the point? Why do babies get sick and die? Why are some people born crippled or in poverty, or rich? It hardly seems fair. Embraced by the light by Betty Eadie gives us God's point of view. Earth is a testing ground where we can see if what we're truly made of. We give ourselves weaknesses to make us grow stronger in the overcoming of those weaknesses. We grow emotionally when we are struck by tragedies. We become more empathetic when we go through hard times.
Eadie's book is so clearly written and so down to Earth that it's easy to understand what could be difficult concepts. Wouldn't you know it that we'd have to die to figure out what our lives on Earth are all about. Thank goodness Eadie came back to let us know that there's nothing to fear. That God loves us and that we're eternal.
I love the chapter on choosing a body. About the spirit trying to get two young people together so that they could be his parents. Puts a whole new spin on blaming your parents for your own short-comings. I guess we only have ourselves to blame for how our lives turn out if we're the one choosing our parents.
In the end, Eadie claims that we are here to love each other. Sounds like a great idea and maybe if everyone had a near death experience, we'd all be more loving.

Comforting and Beautiful

In a conversational manner, Ms. Eadie wrote about her experiences when she died. I felt inspired, comforted and hopeful. I wanted to be a kinder and more compassionate person. Having enjoyed the book immensely, I purchased copies of the book to share with other people when they were grieving the death of loved one. I think most will find the book to be a pleasant and faith-inspiring read.
I admire the courage Ms. Eadie had in writing about such personal and meaningful things.
For those looking for some scientific validation of the afterlife, this isn't the book for you. For those who don't believe in an afterlife, this may not be the book for you. This is one person describing her experience from her perspective in her words.

I was over at a friend's house several weeks ago and while she was in the kitchen, I was rummaging her living room looking for a good spiritual book. This one happened to be placed smack in the middle of her coffee table, I thought, "Ehh, cute enough title. Hmm, never been that interested in Near Death Experiences (NDE). Let's crack open a few pages." And then BAM! I was hooked, I carried the little book with me everywhere I went for the next 2 days. What most impressed me about the author's experience is that it was eloquently written with many levels of understanding and interpretation. My job is that of a Pranic Healer and student of esoteric studies. Her experience inspired me and helped me realize, on a much deeper level, that we are NOT alone, we have so much love, help, and blessings to receive and to give. Death is only a transition. My practice as a Pranic Healer and Arhatic Yogi is to master my non-physical bodies before I leave this world...rather than waiting for the inevitable. Call it, Being in a hurry to serve all sentient beings throughout eternity. I highly recommend this book and its beautiful message of hope. Please get it.

I was really looking forward to reading this book, however, when I read for a while, I found it a chore to finish it. Then I read how the Author is a hypnotherapist, which explained why I had trouble reading it. I would not have bought the book if I'd known this.

Thought Provoking

I was a hospice volunteer when I purchased this book and found the information helpful in providing comfort to those I visited. I have had many friends and family members die for various reasons (accidents, sudden illness, lingering deaths from cancer, old age) and in some ways the book was comforting. I highly recommend this book and Swallowed by a Snake, how men grieve.

Illness Etiquette
Rating (4)

This book heightens awareness of dealing with persons suffering from major illnesses. Much of the book is antidotal, but makes the points easier to understand. It makes suggestions not only for those interacting with someone with an illness, but also makes suggestions for the ill person to implement. A very worthwile read.

This is a great book on a subject that is difficult to discuss and understand. Since we all will have someone sick in our lives at some point, this information will really help you to find the right words.
A comforting book to read. Very well written.

Congratulations to Susan Halpern for creating a beautiful, thoughtful, accessible and spiritual work on a complex subject. I loved that the vignettes that comprise the bulk of the book are so short, simple and non-judgmental. That the author has transformed her own experiences with illness and death into such a constructive and generous contribution to our world is as impressive as it is inspiring. If you?ve ever paused to consider how to address your own or someone else?s hardships, you will appreciate this gem of a book.

?The Etiquette of Illness? is well-written and provides a very good roadmap for those of us who do not have much experience in dealing with illness, either our own or that of friends and loved ones. The best part is the feeling of warmth and community that emerges from the descriptions of real life examples that Halpern uses to illustrate her points. She also allows the reader to forgive himself for mistakes made in dealing with illness in others.
