Nice cookbook--but a bit over the top
Rating (4)
Date: 2009-06-10
5 out of 5 customers found this reveiw helpful
This is a useful little cookbook, featuring about 200 recipes. I wish it had pictures of the meals as they look after preparation, but that is not a major issue. The authors advance the case that proper recipes can "energize your thinking, boost your mood, and sharpen your memory." While I can accept some of that, I fear that they go a bit over the top with sections on food as aphrodisiac, and so on. In short, I am fairly confident that some of their points about the link between diet and brain functioning is somewhat overstated.
That said, though, this book features some useful advice and some nice, doable recipes. The first section is called "Brain-energizing foods." And there are some nice recipes here. There are also useful suggestions (as with each section), such as eat breakfast, enjoy protein, load up on fruits and vegetables, etc. Exemplar recipes? Yogurt deviled eggs, Waldorf salad, sunshine salad (featuring spinach, oranges, red onion, cucumber, red bell pepper), and lemon chicken. The second section is termed "Foods that soothe stress and anxiety." Some recipes that they claim would sooth one's tattered nerves: Italian basil tomato salad (and this sounds easy to make and delicious at the same time), and apricot glazed pork kabobs.
Want to cure an addiction? The authors claim (and I'm surely not convinced) that dishes such as the following can help deal with drug and alcohol abuse): Sweet and sour cabbage and grilled halibut. What about the aforementioned aphrodisiac dishes? Scalloped oysters and fennel, meatloaf, and banana and yogurt crepes.
There are a lot of nice recipes here; many of these clearly appear to be healthy for one. Still, the somewhat oversold claims are a bit much from my view. Nonetheless, the healthy recipes make this a useful cookbook.

This is a very good book for those with a beginning interest in coffee. It is a survey book on the subjects of tasting, roasting,grinding, making, buying, and storing coffee. It is an overview, not an indepth discussion. The book is filled with beautiful pictures. Part two of the book is a global coffee directory that is very informative about world growing regions. It includes a "flavor profile" that tells you what to expect from coffees of each region.

Good Stuff

I bought this book so I could learn how to make some of the stuff that are in the resturants that Andy set up. FOr the most part they ended up tasting fairly similar to the stuff at the resturant. Some of the stuff is hard to make, but over all the book is filled with lots of delicious interesting unique recipies. Highly reccommended, not to mention the book is a very easy fun read

I absolutely love this cookbook. I think Andy is a genius. Four recipes come to mind immediately as EXCEPTIONAL:
* Basil-encrusted pork with corn relish
* Fried-chicken with green onion gravy
* Kung Pao shrimp
* Margarita cake
OK, now I'm hugry. That said, I wouldn't recommend this for the more casual chefs. Andy has some unique flavor combinations which are much harder adjusting if you don't have everything you need, or if you want to fit them to your taste.

by the Meatloaf, Blueberry Bread Pudding and Fontina Tater recipes found within this book. My reputation for Sunday dinner in our family has been spotty at best. The instructions made everything so simple and while I was able to knock it out in no time at all, the results suggested I had been cooking all day.Also, I mixed a few of the rubs for later use-the bbq one is particulary versatile and I've used it on a dozen or so grilled produce/meat. Fantastic cookbook you will refer to often_and a portion of profits go to great cause-what's not to love.

My husband and I love to cook, but we've had little spare time lately. When we have managed to cook, it's been mostly simple stuff. This year we took a four-day weekend to celebrate our anniversary, and we decided to cook up a true feast on Monday. This seemed the perfect opportunity to test out Andy Husbands and Joe Yonan's "The Fearless Chef: Innovative Recipes from the Edge of American Cuisine." Reading through the recipes, they looked like exactly our kind of food; we couldn't wait to try them out.
One of the recipes turned out absoluteley spectacularly--a soy glaze that we put over noodles. Other recipes were good but not great; a mango and cabbage salad and some beans both tasted a bit unbalanced in flavor. In particular, the beans tasted overwhelmingly of the beer that went into them (I'm sure some would see that as a plus!).
Dessert is where the excitement came in. We made a bananas Foster-like recipe that involved a full cup of rum (I had to triple-check the amount because I found it so hard to believe). When we opened the oven at the end of the baking time I heard a whooshing sound and the slam of the oven door. Then I smelled burnt hair. I whipped around, and when my husband turned to face me all I could say was, "umm, you should look in a mirror." His eyebrows and eyelashes, and the front row of his hair, had all been burned partially off. A gout of flame had apparently shot straight out of the oven when he opened it up.
Nothing like that has ever happened to us before.
Dessert was still edible, believe it or not, but once again, just like the beans, the taste of alcohol was so overwhelming that I almost couldn't taste anything else. And no matter how much I love that soy glaze, I can't quite get past that fireball.

The basic information here is very helpful and could change your life for the better. That said, I was still disappointed with this book. It suffers from the same problem that so many nonfiction books seem to. It's got enough interesting and important information to fill a really good article, but that's about all. There's a lot of padding. The book also tells you a lot of stuff you've probably already heard, if you're at all interested in diet and health or if you have had blood sugar or candidiasis problems. I, personally, didn't find the cooking and eating suggestions all that revolutionary.

Great Book
Rating (5)

This is a great book! I was recently diagnosed with Sprue & freaking out because I had no idea what to eat! After a little research, I felt better about knowing which ingredients to eat but had NO IDEA about what to make. This cookbook has tons of ideas! Not too much info/lists of specific foods/ingredients that could have gluten, but lots of great tasting gluten free recipes! My fav is the Southwestern Style Corn Chowder (very sweet) & Taco Soup. She doesn't use tofu as much as I thought she would, but overall a really great resource. I def recommend this book!! It's well worth the money!

I can't say enough good things about this book. The recipes are healthy, delicious, and easy to make with familiar easy to find ingredients. My son was diagnosed with celiac disease and didn't want to give up his vegetarian diet. This book made it possible. It has added dozens of recipes to our dinner time rotation - all of them easy enough to prepare with three young kids underfoot. I'd recommend this book to any vegetarian and anyone avoiding gluten.

The main thing I love about this amazing book is the focus it places on fresh ingredients. Part of the joy of cooking is seeing it evolve from the ingredient to the meal and working with your ingredients rather than pouring them out of a can. This method of cooking is immensely more satisfying even if you just throw everything in the crock pot to come home to a great smelling house later.
The book has each recipe marked as lacto-ovo, vegan or something similar to help you find a recipe that's right for the foods you can tolerate. This would be great for a family with just one gluten and casein free member so you can adjust the ingredients to your needs. That's the way we end up working things out! Hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Many of these recipes contain dairy and eggs, so be warned. But still - the ones that don't contain dairy and eggs look very good. If you are a gluten-free vegetarian, this would be ideal. Unfortunately for this book review, I am a Gluten-Free Vegan.
The reason I gave 3 stars is there are no pictures. Only the picture on the front cover. The recipes are listed as vegan under the title of the recipe.
