Product Description
Despite all of the progress we've made toward equal rights over the last few decades, less than 4 percent of America's largest companies employ women as senior executives. This is not, according to business coach John M. McKee, because female professionals lack the desire or ability to lead. In his thirty years of experience in corporate life, McKee has found that a working woman cannot improve her situation until she more actively manages her career, gains a better understanding of the traditionally masculine culture of the workplace, and refuses to accept lower pay scales and unequal treatment.

If you want to take control of your career—and not depend on those who consciously or unconsciously subscribe to a lingering "old boys" mentality for advancement—you need this book. 21 Ways Women in Management Shoot Themselves in the Foot presents specific, practical tactics that will help you rise to the top:

--How to navigate gender bias in the workplace (it still exists!) --How to avoid common habits that will sabotage your career --The single most important tool used by highly successful professionals

And much more . . .

The book help us women to better understand better ways to move the coporate ladder. In my opinion the content was too light. I expected more.

John McKee's " 21 Ways..." is an efficient tool for all people, female and male, seeking growth in their careers and, as a consequence, in life. The author provides clear examples of cause and effect behaviors as well as practical advice to direct the resulting outcomes.

Each chapter is a concentrated focus on real-life concerns, using real-life examples, and offering real-life solutions. Also, the essence of each chapter is captured in a concise summative chart.

The Four Windows Process at the end of the book included with the 21 tips provides a blueprint for life change to anyone, in business or not, female or not, desirous of growth and achievement. This is a really good tool to be used to create a 'blueprint' for managing your career and personal life - it's probably worth the price of the book by itself. "21 Ways Women in Management Shoot Themselves in the Foot" is a little like having a map in your car - invaluable when you're lost.

The ideal 'reference book'

When I first got McKee's book, I wondered if it was long enough to justify the price - only 132 pages. Now that I've read it, I think it's one of the best books for business I have come across. Unlike Steven Covey's books which seem to take 20 pages to give you 1 'habit'; this one gives you 21 really good business tactics and ideas in just the right amount of space.

I'd read another review that said it was a good book to use for a reference manual where you could refer to it over and over again for real hands-on ideas and strategies. That newspaper writer was absolutely right on. This is a book I will give to others because it's just so easy to use and yet so valuable. If you want to get ahead in business, buy this book!

It says that the author was one of the founding executives at DIRECTV and if they were all this good, it's no wonder that company became so successful. Not just for women - this is great for any guys who work with women as well. Great.

It's been a number of years since I worked for a corporation. Oh, if I only knew then what I learned from reading "21 Ways Women in Management Shoot Themselves in the Foot", I would have done a few things differently. Perhaps I would have had more fun along the way to boot! Certainly, I would have tried to take things less to heart as John McKee advises in his chapter on "Not Separating the Personal From the Professional".

John McKee captures real life situations in his book and provides solid advice on how to deal with them. While much of his advice is aimed at women, I think it is appropriate for anyone trying to move up the corporate ladder. The real world experience John McKee gained working for major corporations gives the book credibility. Here is advice from someone who was there, someone who sat in the boardroom not the classroom. And it's all good advice.

"21 Ways" can be read by anyone wanting career advice and especially by women seeking to advance their careers. It would also be an excellent read for anyone who managers or coaches women.
