Received the book and so far I have learned several things to look for when out looking at model homes and pre-owned homes that I never thought of to look for. The book is laid out in an easy to read format so you can focus on the areas you want or better yet, read the entire book.

Absolute must for any renovations or builds you have a part in doing

This book is a treasure. Excellent resource to have at the beginning, middle or just before final plans of a renovation or build.
Our home was deemed uninhabitable after 2 Florida hurricanes in 1 month! So we took it down to the foundation except for parts of the 4 outside walls.
We told our architect what we thought we wanted. After he did the first phase we decided to do even more.....like doubling its size.
I found this book after we started the design phase...because of months of online research and book store purchases I had made a decent start. After buying this book, I was ecstatic! Quickly I made necessary changes which saved us SO MUCH $$$ AND AGGRAVATION! I kid you not. I wore it out and will never get rid of it! Who knows...my kids or grandkids may need this timeless information. Get the book...what you pay you will save in heartache and $$$$.

This is not a glitzy book (the pictures are black and white), but it is packed with practical, essential, and specific information that you need to know when purchasing or building a house. This is the most useful of a number of house planning books I have purchased.

The book is good at pointing the seller in the right directions. The
author is causious at not going to far in giving too much advice which
causes the reader to have to do more homework. I felt it gave me more
questions than answers. I felt overwhelmed by all the steps and where
to go to accomplish the task at hand.

Easy to read and loaded with valuable tips. For example, we are building a new home and had generated plans with the aid of a home designer and builder. After reading this book, I discovered our dinning room was slightly too small. We planned on a coffered ceiling in the dinning room along with a built-in china cabinet along the wall. None of us had taken into consideration that if we wanted the chandelier centered in the coffered ceiling with the dinning table centered under the chandelier and 36" between the dinning table and china cabinet, then we would need our dinning room extended another 8" from what we had on the original plan. This tip alone was invaluable. There were also many other ideas and suggestions. This book is a must for anyone building, remodeling or purchasing a home.

It's not "death planning" it's "life planning"

This is a very hot topic in Washington right now with a new President and Congress vowing to "do something" about the estate tax. I don't think most Americans are aware that after they die, the government can claim up to 55 percent of their estate -- and that the taxes are due in cash within nine months! In many cases, that can mean the forced liquidation of a family business or sale of family residences. The thing that impressed me is that it is all completely avoidable, by using various strategies including insurance, trusts, family foundations, charitable giving, etc. AND you can still give the full amount to your kids or grandkids or whomever. Amazing! Kilbourn says there are two tax systems, one for the informed and one for the uninformed and after reading his book, I'd have to agree. I found the book to be well-written and easily understandable, not full of technical jargon, although there seemed to be enough alphabet soup to satisfy those who want the details. According to the book, something like a trillion dollars in wealth is going to pass between the greatest generation to the baby boomers over the next 20 years, so if you don't want the IRS to take half of it, either you or your parents need to read this book. It definitely opened my eyes.

I was introduce to this book becasue my Mom was ill and she is in her 90's. Trying to find somewhere for her to stay that is clean with people who care when your income and funds are limited is very hard. This book helps guide you through the processes you need to go through. How to prepare before something happens. Government funds that are available. Power of Attorney.
I am a banker and I give this book out to people when I hear they have a person in their family that is getting older and may need some assistance in the future. This is a good book for all babyboomers to read.

ACHIEVES ITS AIM - INTRODUCTION

This book achieves what it sets out to do: provide a simple introduction to the topic of real estate fixer-uppers and give the beginner a guidemap of a first deal.
It walks the potential investor through the main steps, from finding and choosing a house, to inspecting it, to purchasing it, to doing the basic fixes, to putting it in the market for sale. Being a "Complete Idiots Guide", one knows what to expect, and this book does exactly what it sets out to do. It is particularly useful in giving small tips that would likely only be known by someone with much experience that has fallen into many traps.

Fades come and go but princples stay the same

You should already know the basics: never borrow money for depreciating assets, always spend less than you earn, plan and save for expected expenses, and invest for the future (i.e. retirement).
That's great but just how do you invest and in what?
There are many books, seminars, videos, radio shows, web sites, banks, brokers, news stories, etc. that all seem to have opinions on the latest hot new investments. Often these are simply combinations of older ideas in ways that are so complex you need someone else to manage it.
In "The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need", Andrew Tobias carefully takes you through a fresh view of the basics to help reinforce the reasons why they still work and why you need to stick with them. Then he covers a large variety of the different types of investment instruments, explaining what they are, how they work, and who they are for. Armed with this information you will be able to decide for yourself, which might be useful for you.
Although most of the book is timeless, I certainly will be keeping an eye out for the next edition. I originally ran across a much older edition which didn't have information on ROTH IRA's and actively searched for this book to have his updated insight on them.

Awesome book for beginners

I bought this book with very little knowledge of various types of investments and lot of unsolisited advice on how i should handle my money coming from a million different directions. I don't like others telling me what to do with my money so i decided to educate myself on what is out there and what would work best for me. I have to say that this book is exactly what i was looking for. I like Mr. Tobias' writing style. It is easy to understand, and even the stuff that isn't he broke down so that all you have to do is read that section a few extra times and it all becomes clear. The dialog witty and entertaining while being educational. I find myself smiling about a book on investments! Who knew that was possible?

Pays for itself with the first chapter
Rating (4)

I decided to pick up this little gem of a book after reading John Train's The Craft of Investing for a third time. Mr. Tobias's book was cited in The Craft as recommended reading. Having enjoyed The Craft (and a few other books by Train), I took a lark and put this book on my reading list. After reading it twice, I can safely say that Mr. Tobias knows of what he speaks.
There are three principal demerits to the book. First, it seems that author went to Harvard (pronounced Hah-vuhd, for those in the know). Second, it appears that he studied business at Harvard. Third, it also appears that he graduated from Harvard. Ad hominem attacks aside (with regard to his studies at the Harvard Business School, Mr. Tobias engages in a fair bit of witty self-deprecation in the Preface of this fine little book), there's really nothing wrong per se with the book.
I am of the opinion that the book pays for itself with the first chapter. The key to investment success is the perspective one brings to bear on the activity. Other, more erudite folks have written on the difference between investment and speculation, formulating an investment policy, and investment strategy, but here, in this book, you have a very funny guy, writing in a down-to-earth fashion, telling you that it's not about choosing which game to play or how best to play the game- it's really about deciding whether or not you should be playing any of the games at all. That, in a nutshell is the heart of the book.
Of course, there is the usual investment advice and standard fare that any introductory investment text would include (which doesn't apply to me so I won't elaborate on it). This is the book that I would give to someone who knows absolutely nothing about investment, and that is in need of a sound and safe perspective to guide him or her.
I did find one little problem in the book, having to do with his example dealing with buying wine in bulk as opposed to buying it by the bottle. His calculation of the annual interest rate (APR) achieved by buying in bulk is almost correct (the actual interest rate works out to be about 3.6% per week; he implied an interest rate of 3.4% per week or an APR of 177% per year); he simply erred on the timing of the cash flows, given the way he posed the problem. That minor error aside, the example, as well as the greater text, serves as a wonderful reminder that the safest investment moves are usually the ones closest to the budding investor.

Great starting point
Rating (5)
Date: 2010-01-06
This books an excellent starting point for someone trying to learn the basics of investing. I was expecting the book to be a little more advanced but I did buy this book for a senior level investing course most of which I have seen before. Nevertheless, this is still a great book. The author uses simple examples and is very humorous which keeps the reader entertained. The author mentions several times throughout the book that this is not "the only investment book you will ever need"! However, many people agree this is a good starting book. In the text Tobias makes you realize how much money people waste or do not use to it's full investing potential. He covers the basic investment instruments and what levels of risk you will be taking with them. The author really feels strong about taxes too. He talks about taxes a lot and how to avoid paying an arm and a leg on them. Overall it was an excellent book that I did not learn as much as I would have like because I have seen many of the topics before, but I really enjoyed reading the book.
