This is a very hot topic in Washington right now with a new President and Congress vowing to "do something" about the estate tax. I don't think most Americans are aware that after they die, the government can claim up to 55 percent of their estate -- and that the taxes are due in cash within nine months! In many cases, that can mean the forced liquidation of a family business or sale of family residences. The thing that impressed me is that it is all completely avoidable, by using various strategies including insurance, trusts, family foundations, charitable giving, etc. AND you can still give the full amount to your kids or grandkids or whomever. Amazing! Kilbourn says there are two tax systems, one for the informed and one for the uninformed and after reading his book, I'd have to agree. I found the book to be well-written and easily understandable, not full of technical jargon, although there seemed to be enough alphabet soup to satisfy those who want the details. According to the book, something like a trillion dollars in wealth is going to pass between the greatest generation to the baby boomers over the next 20 years, so if you don't want the IRS to take half of it, either you or your parents need to read this book. It definitely opened my eyes.

ACHIEVES ITS AIM - INTRODUCTION

This book achieves what it sets out to do: provide a simple introduction to the topic of real estate fixer-uppers and give the beginner a guidemap of a first deal.

It walks the potential investor through the main steps, from finding and choosing a house, to inspecting it, to purchasing it, to doing the basic fixes, to putting it in the market for sale. Being a "Complete Idiots Guide", one knows what to expect, and this book does exactly what it sets out to do. It is particularly useful in giving small tips that would likely only be known by someone with much experience that has fallen into many traps.

This is perhaps the best beginners guide to managing your personel finances ever written. Every high school kid should be given a class that uses this book as a study guide. The books publisher is greedy and stupid and charging way to much for a book that needs to be neither priinted or shipped, buy a used phsical copy of this book and save 80%,or wait until book publishers stop being so greedy.

This book was terrible. PLEASE do not waste your money on it. Anything of value in this book, you probably know already. PLEASE, in these tough economic times, find a better book to spend your money on.

You should already know the basics: never borrow money for depreciating assets, always spend less than you earn, plan and save for expected expenses, and invest for the future (i.e. retirement).

That's great but just how do you invest and in what?

There are many books, seminars, videos, radio shows, web sites, banks, brokers, news stories, etc. that all seem to have opinions on the latest hot new investments. Often these are simply combinations of older ideas in ways that are so complex you need someone else to manage it.

In "The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need", Andrew Tobias carefully takes you through a fresh view of the basics to help reinforce the reasons why they still work and why you need to stick with them. Then he covers a large variety of the different types of investment instruments, explaining what they are, how they work, and who they are for. Armed with this information you will be able to decide for yourself, which might be useful for you.

Although most of the book is timeless, I certainly will be keeping an eye out for the next edition. I originally ran across a much older edition which didn't have information on ROTH IRA's and actively searched for this book to have his updated insight on them.

to investing... maybe outdated... but then... that's actually valuable... since the most important aspects of investing haven't changed in millennia.

I bought this book with very little knowledge of various types of investments and lot of unsolisited advice on how i should handle my money coming from a million different directions. I don't like others telling me what to do with my money so i decided to educate myself on what is out there and what would work best for me. I have to say that this book is exactly what i was looking for. I like Mr. Tobias' writing style. It is easy to understand, and even the stuff that isn't he broke down so that all you have to do is read that section a few extra times and it all becomes clear. The dialog witty and entertaining while being educational. I find myself smiling about a book on investments! Who knew that was possible?
