This is the third book of three that I purchased for my nephew who is learning disabled, and who is seeking an apprenticeship for more than one reason. Reason one is that today's overpriced university (modern college) is out of the question; and two, very little money for any trade school. All the information in this book can be had from a visit to the local library. A total waste of money and time. All this book writes about are names of jobs, gives useless charts, but gives no information on how to pursue the apprenticeship, other than to recommend in some instances contacting a union. Again, I will NEVER be influenced by any "reviews."

Ouch! I'm More Creative!
Rating (4)
Date: 2010-06-13

Sometimes you just need a whack on the head to unleash your inner creativity. Not literally of course - I'm speaking metaphorically (which I learned is an important tool of creativity). This classic book originally came out in 1983 and was updated and republished for it 25th anniversary. It is an engaging quick read, filled with quirky drawings and fun facts that will hopefully jolt you out of your comfort zone and inspire you to be more creative. It is structured as 10 mental locks which you can train yourself to recognize and "unlock". They are: 1) The Right Answer 2) That's Not Logical 3) Follow the Rules 4) Be Practical 5) Play is Frivolous 6) That's Not my Area 7) Don't Be Foolish 8) Avoid Ambiguity 9) The Err is Wrong 10) I'm Not Creative.

Don't think that I gave everything away. You actually need to read the book and do the exercises to benefit from the author's wisdom and experience - he has had a long career as a consultant to companies that want to teach their employees how to be creative. Like any self help book, the difficult part is making a change in your thinking and sustaining that change. I like the last part of the book called "A Whack on the Other Side of the Head" which addresses the fact that creativity alone is not enough - you actually need to implement your best creative ideas.
I am going to focus on one mental lock at a time, starting with the "Right Answer" Lock. The idea is that when you think you have arrived at the right answer, ask youself "What is the second right answer?" And just keep generating ideas.

Nothing profound, but if it makes you think differently

I try to read books that are a bit different than what I am used to and this one fits the bill. Not your average business book, it does a very good job of making you think and helps you look at problems from other angles. I have been trying to improve my creativity and the author has many techniques and ideas on helping you realize your true power of creativity. His points are well taken, the corporate world saps your energy for creativity if you let it. This book will help you RE-develop that long lost childlike creativity.

Roger von Oech takes the premise that our educational system and business environment stifle creativity. Through this book, von Oech provides illustrations, puzzles, inspirational quotes, and exercises to help us adults rediscover our creativity.

Von Oech points out that solving a problem requires "soft thinking", which is imagination and creativity, and "hard thinking", which is the practical phase of decision making. Both "soft thinking" and "hard thinking" have their place. When tackling a problem, we should start off like an artist, using "soft thinking" skills to realize there's more than one idea. We can then convert to being a judge, using "hard thinking" skills" to decide which ideas are acceptable and practical to implement.

A Whack on the Side of the Head provides numerous examples and great lessons to improve creativity. The book provides great information about where and how to use "soft skills" to look at a problem from a different perspective.

Fun to Read, Still Working on the Application Part
Rating (4)
Date: 2009-10-03

A Whack on the Side of the Head! How You Can Be More Creative by Roger von Oech is simply written, and reading it feels like a joy ride -- an opportunity to play around with our imagination and turn around our assumptions. Some may think the book is cheesy or absurd, but that's part of thinking creatively. The other part is actually applying it. Von Oech explores ten "mental locks"-- or attitudes that we need for everyday activities but are obstacles to being creative.

1. The Right Answer
2. That's Not Logical
3. Follow the Rules
4. Be Practical
5. Play is Frivolous
6. That's Not My Area
7. Don't Be Foolish
8. Avoid Ambiguity
9. To Err Is Wrong
10. I'm Not Creative

Von Oech shares anecdotes, proposes questions, and includes exercises to overcome these attitudes. He reminds us how simple it is to be inventive and resourceful -- that it is just a change in attitude or the way we think or how we accept things. (Easier said than done.)

When I picked up this book, I wasn't sure in what way I was expecting to be more creative or what would result in getting a whack -- perhaps just in approaching on-the-job problems. Little did I know that the problems I wanted to address were about my outlook on my life. In a nutshell, he encourages to take a risk everyday, however small or big.

I liked that he starts the book with "Mental Sex" and that he includes a chapter "A Whack on the Other Side of the Head" where he talks about getting creative ideas into action. He also says to "Take A Whack At It" by asking questions about what it will take to realize goals, or whatever it may be, creatively. I also appreciate that he explains who inspired him to study creativity -- Heraclitus of Ephesus, whose interpreted message is: "Wake up and pay attention to what's happening around you and within you, and then act on what you've found."

Okay, I'll grant that Myers may paint too rosy a picture about what repairs will cost and what the IRS says about taxes. However, in my opinion, it is the most helpful and practical guide I've read about picking up fixer-uppers, rehabbing them, and then selling them for profit. For anyone with some extra money in this bottomed-out economy, now could be the perfect time to pick up this book, study it thoroughly, then begin an all-out search for the lowest priced fixer uppers on the market with potential. After rehabbing, you could sell them cheap and still make a profit. I highly recommend this book. I only wish I had the money to do what I just suggested. Good luck.

Introduction to a special niche of real estate investing

Readers of real estate books might get confused about all the different methods that they can use to invest real estate. Each author tries to convince them that his or her method is the best. What I like about this book is that the author makes you aware that the world of real estate investing is vast and intricate, and there are many ways for small investors to participate. This book only talks about one niche of real estate investing - buying, fixing, and selling "handyman-special" properties for profit. This is not a get-rich-quick method because it requires hard work and dedication. If you are looking for a book on buy-and-hold strategy, this book is not for you. I would recommend Buy & Hold by David Schumacher.

A huge benefit of this strategy is speed because you simply buy a property, fix it up, and sell it for profit, which you can reinvest in another property. This is a perfect strategy for those who are starting out and don't have a lot of cash. Once you build wealth, then holding properties for long periods of time might make more sense because then you will probably be interested in the cash flow that these properties can generate.

If you are trying to find a step by step guide for this business then this is the book for you. I recommend it to anyone who is interested or new in this type of business. It gives you a business plan and it goes through all the things that really matter, what gives you the best return on your money, how to use outside resources, etc. I looked for a long time for a book that was easy to follow and talked about the subject in a realistic manner and not like of some strange form of art. I found it, this is it.IT ACTUALLY TEACHES WHAT IT SAYS IT DOES.

It will give you the knowledge you need to gain (or in my case re-gain) confidence that you can do this business. I read "Flipping Properties" and it confused the heck out of me by telling me all about taxes and liens and paperwork and contracts before it told me anything. I got confused and intimidated.

"Buy it, Fix it, Sell it, Profit" is definately worth your time. It is the best I have found.

This book was ok, its easy to read, the chapters are 1 - 2 pages each so you can put it down and pick it back up quickly. Light, nothing deep, didn't feel like it taught me any wonderful life lessons, but it was enjoyable to hear a man's take on some of the "womanly" duties. I liked it well enough to recommend it.

Quality Advice for Happy Family Life

As a continuation of his best selling book, "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff", this version deals with family interaction and continues the quality guidance found in Carlson's other books. Carlson has an approach to life centered on keeping things in proper perspective, and this book is filled with thought provoking principles about family relationships and communication.

It is natural to prioritize family; however, Carlson reminds us about the little things that truly express a commitment to family that most people unwittingly overlook. Filled with examples, anecdotes, and down to earth explanations, the message is clearly convened in the short chapters presented in the book. I have no doubt anyone looking to continue or improve family harmony will find value within these pages.

This book was helpful, but not nearly as helpful as Elaine St. James' "Simplify Your Life." I'd recommend starting there, and tackling the peculiarities of life with children -after- you've tried a few of Elaine's suggestions. Elaine has a way of approaching the big picture, finding the chinks, and carving off large chunks of unneeded stress.

This book has more psychological, feel-your-way advice, while "Simplify Your Life" gives concrete, single steps that almost anyone can implement, age not a factor.

I find it a great book to keep in the car for reading during commutes when I am a passenger or even if stuck in traffic. Sure, some of the stuff is common sense but the way Carlson puts it - it really makes you think and makes it real. Definitely one to read and pass on to someone else.

I agree with Robb Dunn's review above and can't believe people are so ga-ga over this author. I've read Don't Sweat The Small Stuff--and It's All Small Stuff, and I'm almost done with the Family book. In both cases you could almost skip the text and just read the chapter headings. I'm finding only one or two chapters in the entire book that are telling me something that isn't simple common sense. And in these chapters he gets to the point in the first few sentences and then just babbles on. Not worth the read.

One outdated (and potentially dangerous) aspect of the book that should be revised--and fast
Rating (3)
Date: 2010-02-12

When an author writes a book about making money and his comments about investing in the stock market are conspicuously outdated, you'd think he'd consider it incumbent on himself to publish an updated version of the book to compensate for it--if, that is, it's important enough to potentially mislead (at least the most gullible of) his readers into behaving, based on his advice, in a financially reckless manner. Such is the case with Carlson's book, which contains a section called "Don't Worry About the Market--Invest in It," that begins with the following words:

"I believe that one of the closest things to a worry-free, wealth-building strategy is to invest, long term, in the stock market, preferably through your company 401K or, if you're self-employed, your SEP. Why? Because historically, to profit from this simple, well-known strategy, it doesn't matter in the short term if the market is going up or down. You win either way. There is absolutely nothing to worry about."

Carlson's book, it should be noted, was published in 1999, before the advent of what Toni Turner, in her book _Short-Term Trading in the New Stock Market," calls the "delicious volatility" that has become the rule rather than the exception in the financial markets since the turn of the millennium.

To continue publishing a book that includes the sentence "There is absolutely nothing to worry about" with respect to the buy-and-hold investment strategy is, I believe, highly irresponsible. At the very least Carlson should offer a free copy of his book to those who can prove, through documentary evidence of the depletion of their brokerage accounts, that they went broke taking his investment advice to heart.

I have nothing against Carlson's "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" attitude toward life (although it's easy to claim that "it's all small stuff" when the books you write that claim such things are what prevent you from having to worry about the sorts of financial problems the mere mortals who buy them end up worrying about), nor about this book for the most part (hence the three stars), but if he's going to branch out into areas outside of his expertise--and in particular investing--perhaps he should hire a professional trader and/or investor to oversee his financial advice and make sure historical conditions haven't rendered it obsolete.

I bought my copy in an used bookshop in Surfers Paradise, Australia.. decided to take back home because of the honest, down to earth advice that some pages exhibit.

I have forund it to be valuable as frequent reading, one chapter at a time and in a random order.. its my opinion the book will be much more valuable if you have already started your process of committment to making money. By that, I mean your inner process, its the part of thinking that creates the path to action (that you must take).

Do it frequently, there is seldom time to talk to a friend who can advice you like this book.

The more original a copy of Psycho-Cybernetics you can get your hands on the better! His foundation is now in the hands of other people (some competent, some sell-outs) who have used it mostly for their personal gain.

I am a big fan of Maxwell Maltz, so was glad when this book was released, even though Maltz has long been dead and anything "new" coming with his name on it really isn't new.

Dan Kennedy is a marketing consulting whom I fell really adds a lot. He is good at explaining the concepts within the book in a plain and simple way. Plus, he adds his own experiences, which will give you a different perspective, as if you had a "book club" discussing the book.

I liked this version. If you enjoy books like Think and Grow Rich, you'll like it as well.

As far as which version of this book to get, I'd say start with the original, which is just by Maltz. Add this one if you like the concepts and want to learn more about them from a different perspective.

Lightweight and disappointing
Rating (2)
Date: 2005-12-12

9 out of 9 customers found this reveiw helpful

This guide to culinary careers is terribly overpriced for the information it contains. The quick descriptions of different culinary careers have some value, as do the appendices listing culinary publications and organizations. However, the career descriptions are quite short and the advice is unremarkable. On the topic of finding a culinary mentor, for example, the author advises you to find one. That's pretty much it - no discussion on how to choose a suitable mentor, or how to convince an experienced professional to take you on as a protege. The book mentions the apprenticeship system but doesn't explain how to find an apprenticeship. The section on choosing a culinary school/vocational program is much better, though.

Something trumpeted in both the book description here and on both covers of the actual book is the inclusion of up-to-date information on salary statistics and earning potential for the spectrum of culinary professionals. It must have been printed in invisible ink, because I don't see it *anywhere* (and yes, I have this exact edition). This promise was my primary motivation for getting the book, so I was very disappointed (disgruntled, even) that this information is NOT in the book after all.

Don't spend money on this book unless you're just looking for a quick overview of the career possibilities. That's the one thing the author does well - it describes (in brief) a wide range of culinary careers beyond the obvious white-linen restaurant ones.

This book could have been greatly improved if it had expanded on the career descriptions, perhaps including short interviews with actual culinary professionals, especially those in roles like institutional cooking or food research. Of course it also would have been much better if it had actually included the promised salary information, too.

It's a good book to have in a library or career center, but it's not much use for your home reference bookshelf.

Women over 50

10 out of 10 customers found this reveiw helpful

The book is almost totally irrelevant to a woman's experiences in changing careers late in life. His only view of women is as a support system for a sucessful male. He has nothing to say about moving from being self employed to being in the job market. He has nothing to say about reclaiming your life when you have been the beneficiary of a medical miracle. He spends half of the book trying to teach men how to balance their lives. Working women are by definition expert on balancing life priorities. He has a chapter on learning how to communicate with people. Most women already have these skills. He assumes the subject will have an emotional support system in place. Single working female parents have to be their own support system.

Robert K. Critchley has written a What Color Is Your Parachute? for the over-50 crowd. The book is timely in that changes in the workplace, medicine and technology have made it possible - and in some cases economically mandatory - for older people to remain in the workforce as full-time and part-time employees, temps and consultants. For many people in this age bracket, however, it's been many years since they last plunged into a job search. We from getAbstract highly recommend this book, which tends to the basic, for all readers in this newly emerging group.

I bought "Self Matters" for $2 at a bookstore because the spine was broken. Thank heaven I did not spend more! Dr. Phil repeats stuff over....and over.....and over.....trying to make the same point over....and over....and over. After getting part of the way through the book I thought it may be OK if I can just ignore the repetition. So, I started on the "meaty" part of the book where you are supposed to disect your life's traumas and find the "real you". Not good. I jumped ahead to see if any of this work actually goes anywhere later that would make this of value, but as far as I'm concerned this is like any other pithy self-help book out there. There is a TON of writing for you to do, and endless analysis of events that have shaped you, good or bad. Dr. Phil is like all the others who believe with willpower and an attitude you can make the world fall into the order you want it to. Tell that to regular working class folks who often have very little choice in many areas of life.

How American that we collectively have this idea that with the right thoughts, self-talk and cheap advice our lives can be controlled absolutely by us. Although I like Dr. Phil somewhat on TV this book is a bust.

McGraw's book is basically about opening your eyes and having a serious, honest look at your life and where its going. If its going where you want to go, fine. If it isn't, he stresses that you have to be honest and admit to yourself that it isn't going correctly, and if so, don't just sit back or bury your head in the sand and hope to end up where you should be, whether in relationships, or work or parenthood.

Instead, look at those who are successful at want you want to do and find out what they are doing right and then apply it. Be strategic, be purposeful, move forward. Basically, do something constructive with your life and don't drift through it hoping to get somewhere. Have a plan. Have a strategy. Find out what works and apply it to your life.

Its a great read and its an "honest" read. McGraw is up front and realistic throughout it. No sugar coating. If you ever read "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey and enjoyed it, you will enjoy McGraw's book. In my opinion his book is definitely on par with what Covey did.

I find that when such good strategies as presented here are combined with mindfulness meditation, which provides a way of of establishing a healthy, non-reactive inner therapeutic space in which difficult emotions, depression, anxiety and trauma can heal. If you would like to couple this sound advice with the healing power of mindfulness, then I also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation' available through Amazon.

I've done so much work on myself in the past, trying to find out who I am and my purpose in life. I've read The Purpose Driven Life, Awareness, The Four Agreements, Dianetics, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, The Road Less Traveled, and many other books because I was unhappy with my life. I felt stuck. And I know I'm meant for something other than working at a job I hate. Those books helped me open doors inside, clean the glass off many windows, and shed light on many aspects of my life I hadn't thought of in years.

You'll need a journal to write stuff in for this book. So what the difference between this one and The Self Matters Companion is really unclear; from what I saw the companion book has space for your writing, though I doubt it'll be enough. This book takes some of the concepts from other books and mixes them with personal stories from Dr. Phil, the purpose to spark some memories within yourself to apply to the exercise you will take over the next few days. And you should expect to take quite a bit of time to finish these exercises, being as thorough as possible, as honest as possible; some of the later exercises, especially the 5-step Plan, could take a couple weeks. Don't rush through the book and jot down anything or you'll be wasting your time.

You owe it to yourself to find out what you really want in life, to do the best you can for yourself, to be honest with yourself and others. This book showed me that I had to forgive myself after years of self-abuse, self-hatred, guilt, and shame. I couldn't have done it without the help from this book.

Dr. Phil wrote this book for you if you are constantly trying to live up to others' expectations of you rather than to your authentic identity. If you are unsure of the person you really are, his exercises can help if you do them. He has you list your Ten Defining Moments, Seven Critical Choices and Five Pivotal People. The exercises really have to be done to be useful. While I think it is a very good book, I would have liked more stories and examples, since I think as is obvious from his TV show that this is where he really shines. Power Path to Love
