John McKee's " 21 Ways..." is an efficient tool for all people, female and male, seeking growth in their careers and, as a consequence, in life. The author provides clear examples of cause and effect behaviors as well as practical advice to direct the resulting outcomes.

Each chapter is a concentrated focus on real-life concerns, using real-life examples, and offering real-life solutions. Also, the essence of each chapter is captured in a concise summative chart.

The Four Windows Process at the end of the book included with the 21 tips provides a blueprint for life change to anyone, in business or not, female or not, desirous of growth and achievement. This is a really good tool to be used to create a 'blueprint' for managing your career and personal life - it's probably worth the price of the book by itself. "21 Ways Women in Management Shoot Themselves in the Foot" is a little like having a map in your car - invaluable when you're lost.

The ideal 'reference book'

When I first got McKee's book, I wondered if it was long enough to justify the price - only 132 pages. Now that I've read it, I think it's one of the best books for business I have come across. Unlike Steven Covey's books which seem to take 20 pages to give you 1 'habit'; this one gives you 21 really good business tactics and ideas in just the right amount of space.

I'd read another review that said it was a good book to use for a reference manual where you could refer to it over and over again for real hands-on ideas and strategies. That newspaper writer was absolutely right on. This is a book I will give to others because it's just so easy to use and yet so valuable. If you want to get ahead in business, buy this book!

It says that the author was one of the founding executives at DIRECTV and if they were all this good, it's no wonder that company became so successful. Not just for women - this is great for any guys who work with women as well. Great.

It's been a number of years since I worked for a corporation. Oh, if I only knew then what I learned from reading "21 Ways Women in Management Shoot Themselves in the Foot", I would have done a few things differently. Perhaps I would have had more fun along the way to boot! Certainly, I would have tried to take things less to heart as John McKee advises in his chapter on "Not Separating the Personal From the Professional".

John McKee captures real life situations in his book and provides solid advice on how to deal with them. While much of his advice is aimed at women, I think it is appropriate for anyone trying to move up the corporate ladder. The real world experience John McKee gained working for major corporations gives the book credibility. Here is advice from someone who was there, someone who sat in the boardroom not the classroom. And it's all good advice.

"21 Ways" can be read by anyone wanting career advice and especially by women seeking to advance their careers. It would also be an excellent read for anyone who managers or coaches women.

The book was a relatively easy read, as I was able to finish it in a couple of weeks on my down time. As far as it being a "guide to getting ahead at work and in life"...what a joke!! The whole book talks about how Cathie basically "stuck it to the man" and then she has the audacity to right a 3 page "about the author" at the back of the book. When I got to this section I thought...what more is there to know about you...you rambled on about your life for nearly 300 pages! Good for Cathie that she worked hard to get where she was, but only about 10 pages of this book were valuable to help anyone else do the same. The basis of the book goes like this: "here's a rule i live by...now let me tell you a story about me...now let me remind you how this story relates to this rule" I've been wanting to read this book for a few years now, and I should have just kept waiting.

I have read half of this book - just got it. She is a good storyteller. It is easy to read and entertaining. Most importantly, she is a tough cookie who has manuevered in the cut throat world of publishing and climbed to the TOP. SHe has a lot of good advice of how to act or not react in the corporate world. I highly recommend this book - highly. Esp. if you have been in work situations where you didn't know how to save yourself from "political machinations."

Cathie Black's book is one of the better business books I've read lately that are aimed at the female executive or career builder. Others seem to focus on working all the hours God sends with little attention given to what happens when you go home at night. Cathie Black's book doesn't tell you how to get dinner on the table and do the laundry after running a publishing company all day, however she does point out that having a 360 degree life means making sure you have something to go home to at the end of your working day rather than working for the sake of it; advocating also to take the vacation time you're entitled to. Her book is honest and open and she generously shares many of the mistakes she has made in her career so that the reader can (hopefully) learn before experiencing! There are short case-histories dotted through the book and little phrases highlighted in red to emphasize the message of each section. I particularly liked her story on being faced with celebrities/charmers and remembering to remain discerning rather than dazzled; difficult in the midst of negotiation but necessary nonetheless. Highly recommended over the more recent business books because she focuses on what really matters. She's no one's fool and she may seem aloof in her business manner but she gets it and more importantly she's taken the time to share it.

This book was required to be studied in my business school class on "Coaching". I work at a bank. What i noticed was that successful managers are using many of the techniques given in the book. Our entire training model is also based on this book. That helps me understand my bosses, planners of coaching and the bank policy behind the coaching. Reading the book has helped my selling ability. Instead of being an aggressive seller, I am learning to be persuasive seller.
You can judge for yourself what your needs are and then decide what to do, whether to read the book or continue with your current work habits.

There are a lot of positive reviews written about this book, however I have to take a contrary opinion. Having been a leader and manager in both large and small companies for over 30 years, and having done a lot of studying on coaching, leadership, and management - I found myself questioning whether the author had ever worked or studied with real companies and in real situations ever in his life.
And, just to challenge my preliminary conclusions, I tryed a couple of the coaching strategies in my own company, and they failed miserably with employees in need of significant coaching.

A Must-Have Book for Any Manager / Leader / Mentor
Rating (5)
Date: 2008-11-29

1 out of 1 customers found this reveiw helpful

The key focus for any person in a management, leadership, or mentoring position should always be to help their employees be as fulfilled as possible. In many ways that is the definition of management - that the manager's main task is to manage people. It is their duty, their job to help those they are managing. Many managers lose track of that - they yell at their employees, mistreat them, and work them to the bone. This then results in the employee's losing motivation or even quitting. Rather than the boss' activities helping his company, he is actually causing serious harm.

This book helps to remind all who have responsibility for people that they need to take that responsibility very seriously.

First, the book goes over the basics of what it means to be a manager. A manager achieves results through others. It is what the manager's *reports* do which is important. Therefore, a manager must do everything he can to help his reports succeed. If an employee fails, it's really the manager who has failed.

Each employee (typically) only has one manager. Therefore, as challenging as it might be, a manager must treat every employee as if she was the only one. This can be tough! If a manager greets 20 employees during a morning, the 20th greeting must be as honestly sincere and warm as the first. A manager who "wears out" and gives that 20th employee only a half-hearted HI is not giving that "last employee" their fair share. Your task as a manager is to make the effort to care for all employees as well as you can, to learn the techniques to help them succeed.

Every employee needs recognition, needs to be shown when they are improving. Even "failing less frequently" is very important. A manager doesn't have a PhD in psychoanalyzing. You can't pretend to be a therapist. Your job is to fairly provide them with all the options you can, explain their tasks, praise them when they succeed.

Labeling people tends to restrict your options with them, and should be avoided. If you call someone "lazy" then you tend to treat them in a certain way which can greatly hinder their ability to succeed. Rather than falling back on labels, treat each person as an individual and work with their specific needs and situations.

Managers who call their workers "lazy" or "unmotivated" often haven't taken the time to really understand the situation. The book gives MANY examples where a manager made that sort of judgement about a person - and then further investigation found something quite different to be the cause. For example one manager thought his truck-packing people were careless, but actually boxes were being thrown at them so quickly that they had no choice but to stack them haphazardly.

Employees tend to do the best they can in a given situation. You as a manager might look at someone and say "why in the world did they not create a full report? They only gave me half of what I wanted." In many cases, though, the employee honestly thinks they are giving you everything you need. If you sit down and create a checklist with them, and ensure they follow it, that can often help. That way they really do know what you want. Another thing the book reminds you is that humans crave attention. It might be that the only time you pay attention to certain people is when they make a mistake! They might subconsciously be making mistakes to get that attention.

Your task as a manager is to help them see all their options, to learn about new alternatives. You need to help them know when they are on the right path by providing specific, positive, prompt feedback on anything good they do. If you find something negative going on, you need to work to change that *behavior* - you can't ever change a person.

Another issue the book brings out is that people rarely hear - verbatim - what you say to them. Their mind is constantly thinking and interpreting and guessing. So most of what the book teaches as your technique is to work conversations so that they are complete sentences. This technique works well for relationships too! You should never ask "yes/no" questions. You should phrase your responses so you repeat back their sentiments, so that they become more fully understood. You should phrase questions or comments to them so that they then explain the idea back to you.

If you find all of this to be "common sense" that you could use no help with, then congratulations! You're in the 1% of the population who is an ideal manager and needs no help. However, for the rest of us 99% people, even if some of this seems familiar, the "how to" for dealing with difficult situations alone is worth the price of this book. What I've described above isn't even one small part of what the book steps you through.

Highly recommended!

This book is great because you can read it in an a few hours or less and it is full of helpful information about why work isn't working for you. If you have a bad boss or coworker you will see them show up in the "Seven U's of Unlikeablity". (For example if your boss is upstaging, unappreciative or unavailable you might want to give them a copy of the book!)
Or better yet you can use the Seven U's as a checklist for yourself to make sure you aren't the problem!
This author has been a workplace mediator for a long time and she uses real examples to keep it interesting.

Great guide for creative peeps...

Goodman dishes on what it's like to be a creative professional in this guide for freelancers. She covers everything structurally (business plan, anyone?), as well as important (licenses and lawyers?) and unimportant (do you really need 1,000 sheets of letterhead on your first day?) issues.

Broken into three categories:
You Fled the Cube, Now What?
Sell, Baby, Sell
Your So-Called Life

and followed by the epilogue and web resources, Goodman dishes it to her readers straight. She doesn't pretend to know it all or have been the star student in her learning process, but she does impart her knowledge in an approachable way.

She even suggests that if you can't take the rejections that come in with selling yourself and your work, for a quick pick-me-up, you should Google "famous rejections." I LOVED that piece of advice.

Goodman also breaks down game plans into do-able pieces. What would you do to write for your favorite magazine? She has suggestions on how to make this happen. She lived it and learned it, and she shares it with us here.

She's witty, well researched, candid, and best of all, keeps a positive/upbeat but serious tone about how to really make it. I recommend it more than any other "field guide" out there right now.

A Refreshing, Positive, Clearly Written Explanation on How To Motivate with Hope Instead of Fear!
Rating (5)
Date: 2006-08-16

2 out of 2 customers found this reveiw helpful

In their book, Putting Hope to Work: Five Principles to Activate Your Organization's Most Powerful Resource, Harry Hutson and Barbara Perry identify, and help us understand the inspirational value of Hope in the work place. While often thought of in the realm of vague spirituality or wishy-washy Pollyannaism, the authors clearly demonstrate that Hope, and its value within thriving, achieving organizations is anything but wishy-washy!

Stating that the "Hopes of an organization are consolidated in a company's belief in what you're trying to accomplish," they show how Hope within an organization is inevitably linked to the company's mission and vision - and where there is no vision, the people perish. The importance then, of a company's vision cannot be overstated. It's not coincidence that there is such a lack of "hope-talk" in the modern work place accompanied by a tangible sense of hopelessness.

While traditional management theory focuses on "driving out fear," pioneering authors Hutson and Perry compel us to focus on Hope instead, to "bring energy to the more life-enhancing side of the equation, creating more vibrant, creative, collaborative and successful workplaces."

Hutson and Perry identify the five principles of Hope - Possibility, Agency, Worth, Openness and Connection - and define Hope as "an orientation to a positive future that engages our heads, hearts and hands." When these principles are present - and sustained - within an organization, individuals and their organizations succeed.

In presenting their five principles of Hope, Hutson and Perry highlight research proving the effectiveness of Hope within an organization and provide detailed examples of how to evaluate and improve your skills as a leader fostering Hope within your organization or team. You'll learn who "Hopeful" leaders are, what they do, and how they keep their own Hope alive in times of difficulty or stress.

While some management books present theory alone, Hutson and Perry provide clear, useable tools to create and sustain Hope within your organization. Relying on their many years of management consulting and research, they feature real-life examples from a variety of industries. Combined with the tangible results presented from companies with cultures of Hope, led by "Hopeful" leaders, Putting Hope to Work is an inspirational and practical guide to implementing the power of Hope within your organization or team.

Good general overveiw
Rating (4)
Date: 2003-04-12

This book provides a good general overveiw into sexual harassment. It also provides details as to what an employer should do to limit liability. Beyond that it gives examples of interveiws and ideas for implementing a policy. This is a good choice for those without an extensive HR department who need a general guide. Lost one star because it is not a be all end all guide, but I doubt that was the intention.
