Definately not the expected Ludlum
Rating (2)
Date: 2008-07-21
I also could not finish this book, and I was captive on a coast to coast flight. The comedy in this book is strained and it is obvious that Ludlum was trying way too hard to be funny. I had to read and re-read passages just to make sense of what was written. The Road to Omaha is very bumpy indeed.

Not Great for Ludlum
Rating (1)

I'm sorry I bought it. Even though I read about it first, it was quite different from what I expected. In comparison to other Ludlum books,
this one is just awful. Didn't even finish it.

The Hawk is back with his hijinks and silliness, and out to get some of his own back on those that booted him out of the Armed Forces.
Here, he has dug up some obscure piece of legislation, and with the helf of a lawyer and a native American tribe, is looking to get the government to give him Nebraska. Hence the Omaha in the name. Nebraska just happens to be where some of the Air Force command is situated.

rude humor, not as good as other Robert Ludlum books
Rating (3)

some parts are funny, but it just didn't hold my interest like his newer books do. I couldn't put the Scorpio Illusion down. This one I struggled through. It just didn't move along like his other intense novels do. and there was quite a bit of off-color humor I couldn't appreciate.

Road to Omaha could have been a really funny and enjoyable book if the author had just gone a little softer with off the wall "coincidences" and having 98% of the conversations being disjointed screaming matches. As it is I bought 10 books for $1.00 at a yard sale and this books wasn't even worth the .10 cents it cost me.

Mediocure Plot, Good Flying, Poor Technical Details
Rating (2)
Date: 2009-08-29

In "The Shadow's of Power," James Huston gives us an unlikely plot, that of a terrorist attack on the Navy's Blue Angels flight demonstration team, which never seems to get off the ground. The characters aren't developed and his attempts at plot twists either fall flat or are too obvious. Unlikely plot elements include the Navy cancelling the Blue Angels - like Congress would ever allow that. It takes away their chance to be seen in their district and from a recruitment standpoint, the Blue Angels are one of the best things out there. Huston also gets on his soapbox about how pilots are the heros while the operators on the ground are really doing the work. While true, the dialogue and the scene where used doesn't fit the plot.
Huston's knowledge of Navy flight operations seems good but the Blue Angels would never deploy on a foreign tour without their C-130 and wouldn't transit on an Aircraft Carrier. It would be too risky to the aircraft and would take too much time. His knowledge of Stinger missiles is very poor with mistakes in simple details that any Marine PFC at the Stinger School at Ft Bliss would know. Huston seems to like to use the nomenclature of military weapons but limited understanding of their employment.
This book is okay for the flight ops part but poor on the rest of the details. I wouldn't waste the time.

In the style of Tom Clancy, this technical suspense thriller is a book dripping with testosterone. The author is knowledgeable and I will seek out another book by him.

THE SHADOWS OF POWER begins with a quick air battle between two MiGs from Algeria, and two F/A-18 aircraft, escorting an E-3 reconnaissance plane in Algerian airspace. One of the MiG's gets shot down under apparently confusing circumstances, killing the Algerian pilot. The Algerian brother of the pilot, living and studying in the USA, decides to take revenge by trying to kill the US pilot responsible for his brother's death. The ultimate end of the novel is obvious from this point on. Along the way, we bump into the National Security Advisor and the Secretary of Defense plotting against one another, and we get (to my mind) a bit to much detail on the Blue Angels, effectively a flying show. Also along the way, the mandatory cloak-and-dagger element in the form of Ken (Rat) Rathman, who, much like Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp, confuses patriotism with revenge, and is capable of little else but mindless, gratuitous violence, which detracts from, rather than adds to, the story.
I found this read a little dull. The author is clearly most comfortable writing about flying and describing flying scenes. He should perhaps stick to that. Unfortunately, this background (for that is what it is, flying is the foreground here) of an Arab terrorist plot is common in popular fiction today, and needs some skillful handling to make it competetive with the plethora of other works that abound on this subject. It didn't get the skillful handling it needed in this book. Several stories were running together in this book. Political intrigue and manipulation, primarily between the National Security Advisor and the Secretary of Defense. But this sub-theme didn't really add to the story, and the reader is left wondering if perhaps something essential got edited out. I would have edited it all out!
I guess when you see "New York Times Bestselling Author" written on the spine of all places, you know that the publishers have their doubts....... My recommendation: Unless you love flying scenes, give this one a miss.

Fast Action

The EP-3E Aries reconnaissance plane makes a cameo appearance in this book, as the instigator of the entire plot line. The action picks up with two F/A-18 Hornets hiding under its wings, and barely slows down for the rest of the 400 pages. The Blue Angel flying details seem plausible enough, but that kind of plane isn't my specialty. I didn't have any trouble suspending my disbelief through most of the story. We see inter-agency distrust and squabbling; we see power struggles at all levels of bureaucracy; we see special forces members saving the day nearly single-handedly. I found the action and plot quite engaging and will definitely pick up a few other books by this author.

The Twinkie Squad
Rating (5)
Date: 2009-03-19
This book was so funny, yet it had a good moral. The moral was definitely exposed as saying don't use prejudice. I really liked the school play part where Douglas got dressed in clown pants by accident. My favorite characters were the Richardsons because of their silliness and those cheesy smiles they always had throughout the book. You would enjoy this book if you were into comedy and enjoy surprises in books, this is certainly the type of novel you'd want to read.

I am a teacher in British Columbia, Canada and I have to say, the students love this book. I have introduced it for a number of years in a literature circle setting, where kids get to discuss books. Both the kids and their parents really appreciate a book with both great comic relief and serious issues, such as bullying and learning disabilities addressed. The kids simply howl at some of the antics of Douglas and his "friends". I have had many parents thank me for choosing such a fantastic book! I simply cannot believe it is officially out of print!!!

Lousiest Book I've Probably Ever Read

As this tries much too hard to be comedy, I found it very boring. Some people will disagree, but I didn't think there was anything the least bit funny about this book. Maybe I just didn't think it made sense. Might I ask what IS funny about it. I didn't want to read this, but I did anyway, and I didn't surprise myself. My favorite book of all time is "The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy." "The Twinkie Squad" is the total opposite of that. It just plain sucks on ice, big time! It sucks as much as the 1996 Romeo and Juliet movie: You don't know what to expect from it, but shortly after, you know the rest will suck.

Read it years and years ago in middle school. Loved every letter of it, reread it over and over... no wonder I aced every quiz on it. It's funny in a clean, good, not-slapstick or stupid but a humorous way. Very good description, well-developed characters, G-R-R-R-R-R-E-A-T plot... and my favorite lesson, contrary to the one preached on t.v. shows for tweens that everyone has what it takes to be popular but it's not worth it, but that there are some cool and some "geeks", and it's always okay to be the latter: We had more fun!

There is nothing like the blatant atmosphere of rich and powerful celebrities being killed off to make for a good popcon mystery. Fluffy and fun, Ms. Clark takes the sister of a famous actress (a famous actress who just so happens to be a recent murder victim) and makes her an unlikely heroine in murders among the rich.

Weep No More My Lady follows the Clark formula for her stories. The suspense and guessing part is to find out who amongst the people surrounding the principal players is the killer. Clark was okay, but is now beginning to be a "read one, read all" type.
